HELLCAT NEWS
September 1989
all for it.
We'll be attending the South-
eastern Chapter meeting in St.
Augustine, Florida the week-
end of November 3, 4, 5th, but
can make it to Clinton, Iowa
on November 11th for the 43rd
shindig.
We'll want to stay where the
celebration will take place (Best
Western Frontier Motor Inn),
so just let us know about sub-
mitting the hotel reservation,
and we'll take it from there.
Also, let us know if there is
anything we can do to assist
you in this get-to-gether. Sounds
like a lot of fun, and a change
to see some faces I've probably
forgotten over the years. Norb
-Note/Ebbie said it's a GO-And
with the Christy's-Bruemmers-
and Stones saying Okay to
Veteran's Day Nov, 11th, we've
got a good start on this. We
hope others can see their way
clear on this get-together of D
Company men. All are welcome.
Nothing big-nothing fancy-just
a good visit and gab session.
Luther Bennett (A) a short
note - Stoney, Hi to you and
your Kitten, And all the other
Cats and Kittens. Hope all that
read this are enjoying the sum-
mer, and doing a lot of fishing.
I haven't been yet this year,
been too busy moving and get-
ting ready to go to the hospital
next month. Never dreamed I
had so much junk. Bought a
small 2 bedroom home in town.
Stoney, saw Bob McGuire's
name in the P.O.W. Mag.
Couldn't find it in the 12th
roster, is he a member? I'm send-
ing $10.00 bucks to boost him
in. Here's the info I have on
him. - Your Buddies and Fellow
Hellcat, Luther Bennett - -
And Luther called - Luther
expressed his deep sympathy
and feelings on the passing of
Captain Tom Kelley (A). Tom
Kelley and Luther had remain-
ed true friends since their ser-
vice days. It is always a shock
to lose a close and good friend.
Bob McGuire (C) is a member
of the 12th Armd. Div. Assn.
Lu, and he and his wife Mary
Jo will be on hand in San
Antonio. And Luther your
donation has been used for
another Hellcat, a fellow that
really needs a hand right now.
We are sorry that the Doc's
and you are keeping such close
company, and hope that they
give you a clean bill of health

you as to plans for get together.
Sorry to hear about Ebbie.
We have a big garden so lots
of work. Had fresh green beans
and ripe home grown tomatoes
for supper.
We had Raymonds grandson
from Vera Beach, FL with us
for 2Vi weeks, took him to Des
Moines last Thursday to catch
a plane home.
We have eight Brittany pup-
pies, 4 male and 4 female - just
as fat as butterballs.
We were suprised to find your
new address, probably an 8
hour trip from Attumwa to
Mapleton. Weather just about
the same as Illinois.
We are looking forward to
Clinton and possibly the Mid-
west.
We are both feeling good, but
wear out easily. Must be our
age. Raymond belongs to a
Poppin Johny two cycle Club.
(Old John Deere tractors.) Meet-
ing tomorrow night and having
Homemade ice cream.
We have canned 21 quarts of
green beans. Raymond has
been making Kosher Dill pic-
kles for several in the neigh-
borhood. We keep busy. Write
when you have time. It's great
to be a "Hellcat", enjoy your
piece in the HCN. Love, Ruth
and Ray.

It was well after 0800 when
we finished breakfast. I thought
the factory would be in full
swing but no workers arrived.
Still no work by 1100. I suppos-
ed the workers had declared a
holiay. After lunch I left with
another fellow to look for a
room. Instead we found a hotel
that had, of all things, a bar
serving whiskey and beer! I
had one of each. Soon I met
Youngquist and Matson. They
told me that the 493rd was in
Bischweiller and when I told
and send you packing.
HISTORY - Part of a para-
graph in a recent letter from
Historian Ken Bradstreet. I re-
ceived your letter of the 11th,
and as usual am tardy in an-
swering. You are right, the new
history book is keeping me a
little on the busy side. I made a
trip to Paducah, Kentucky the
first week in June and met with
the publisher and his staff. We
stayed busy for three long days
and got our ideas together. It
should be a good second
volume. We do need more pic-
tures from individuals, showing
them in the old days, including
some of yourself! As I work on
this book I am now thinking
that a 3rd volume could well be
made, using nothing but individ-
ual dairy accounts and unit
histories, which would be very
interesting. Etc, etc.
So you see guys. Ken is busy
and involved in this second
volume of 12th Armd. Div. His-
tory. Get those pictures in, and
personal stories or tales that
only YOU know. Don't be left
oiit - the cut off date is close.
DUES - How about making a
note on your calendar to get
those dues in early. Many mem-
bers are paid a year or two
ahead now. But to those of you
who always drag your feet at
dues time (you know who you
are) suprise the Executive Sec-
retary. GET YOUR DUES IN
ON TIME.
Have a safe trip, have a good
trip.
God Bless You All,
Stoney
them about the bar serving
whiskey and beer, we repaired
thither and partook of a few. I
returned to the peep and Sea-
ton told me that the battery
was getting ready to displace.
Soon after, other members of
Divarty came along and we
learned that the battery would
not move for at least two hours.
So, back to the bar and had
two more rounds, at the end of
which, I was beginning to feel
the effects.
When I again returned to the
peep, Capt. Morgan had just
come up to look for me. He said
that Maj. Olvier was going to
try to locate the 493rd and that
I would accompany him. We
accordingly drove to Bischweil-
ler where Divarty was to set
up. Col. Hartman was in town
and we followed him to the new
CP of the 493rd. Later, the Col.
sent us down the road to pick
up the battalion. We drove on
and came upon a railroad
watch house overlooking a cross-
ing and dropped in to chat with
the guard. The old gent had a
few shots of liquor left. The
bottle was still on the table
when Capt. McWorkman walk-
ed in. He had seen our peep
and thought perhaps our CP
had been set up in the guard
house. I pointed out our location
on a map and he left. Later
Ackerman and Frontino stop-
ped in. They had been sent to
locate us. We returned with
them to the intersection where
the battalion would turn left,
and shortly the battalion show-
ed up. We returned to Divarty
for supper and sleep. Lt. Carl-
son came down for my relief
and told me that I could remain
overnight.
9 January 1945
At about 1000 we returned to
our battalion. Shortly before we
left Divarty our troops marched
by with about 60 Heinies under
guard. I had heard that approxi-
mately 100 had been taken, but
there were not quite that
many. The neighborhood into
which we had moved was still
occupied by civilians, as was
the whole town. German money
is in prevalent use in this town
although French money is
accepted. Some of the boys had
gotten some whiskey the pre-
vious night and I, accordingly
inquired after some. I was inform-
ed that in the neighboring town
there was plenty available.
After chow, Petrik and I drove
to the town. We stopped at the
