came forward and I was "back
home." I miss the HUBERS.
At the banquet, as is not
unusual, there was just one place
setting short at the tables for my
unit. No problem. RAY STAR,
17th, took me under his wing and
filled me in on the Association
through the years I had been
"lost."
It is for these reasons and many
others that it is safe to say, the
TWELFTH ARMORED DIVI-
SION ASSOCIATION, is the
greatest group with which to be
joined. No other has the strength
of common cause, friendliness and
selflessness which we enjoy.
We are additionally honored to
have among us, members of the
44th TK BN, "children" of the
12th Armored Division, who, due
to the vagaries and necessities of
war were taken from us and sent
to the South Pacific but now have
the opportunity to be welcomed
back.
You have additionally blessed
me by giving your Association an
Executive Council which is im-
pressed not by themselves their
titles of their pet projects but
rather by their dedication to duty
and responsibility. Two examples
stand out: ALLEN HOROWITZ,
who, at a not inconsiderable ex-
pense to his finances, time and
health, serves a difficult function
with no complaint but with sincer-
ity and accuracy. GIL HEINE,
who must be dragged from his
unit buddies to take his proper
place on the dais for our banquets,
although that departure from his
buddies is for a relatively short
time. The members of the council
are not only looking at the busi-
ness of our Association not but to
the future of the Association as
well.
There have been many com-
ments addressed toward the
"large" reserve we have in our
treasury. In today's marketplace
that reserve is not large. As an
illustration just two banquets for
the number of Hellcats who at-
tended St. Louis would exhaust it.
We all remember and some
complain about an increase in our
dues (still the lowest of any asso-
ciation) in which they were raised
from five dollars to $7.50, in the
recent past. Our membership
dues dollar goes largely to put out
our "Hellcat News." The balance
between that cost is earmarked
for other operating expenses. You
will note that the stated subscrip-
tion rate has been raised from
$4.00 to $6.00. The other organiza-
tions such as ours (non-profit)
have a much higher rate or in
some cases, notably the AARP,
show a ridiculously low fee which
would barely cover mailing
charges and handling. We attempt
to reflect, as clearly and as close-
ly as possible, our true cost of
publication so as to keep faith
with our members.
Our surplus then is largely
monies realized from reunions. It
is a truism that it is better to be
one dollar over than one cent
under expenses. The concensus of
most of the officers who have or
are now serving is that this
surplus be used to subsidize
future reunions to some degree
when it becomes necessary. This
subsidization would be considered
at such a time when we find
ourselves, individually in the posi-
tion of being less affluent and the
Association less active financially.
We can not expect to maintain our
present level of dollar support for
our reunions by our fellow Hell-
cats. In another 2, 3, or 4 years,
we shall have to take a new look
at our entire picture of reunion
expenses. Thus the reasoning
behind our reserves.
Article IV, Secti6n 2, of our con-
stitution, reads in part: "All ap-
pointed officers are responsible to
the president and serve at his
discretion." As you all know, this
means that each such officer
serves from appointment until
such officer is relieved by the
presiding officer. It is customary
and accepted practice for all
appointed officers to tender their
resignation, either formally or
tacitly, to each succeeding presid-
ing officer. It is then incumbent
upon the presiding officers to
accept or to reappoint such elec-
tive officer.
We have been fortunate in the
past with our appointive officers.
I, as president-elect at St. Louis,
accepted all resignations and re-
appointed all except one. There
were several elements which we
considered before that change
was made. The one consideration
which made that decision difficult
was the fact that KEN WARNES
did a magnificent job of adjust-
ing and correcting our member-
ship rolls. Not since our member-
ship was less than half its present
strength have our records been so
accurate. KEN gave us the clean-
est set of membership records
yet.
We now have a new executive
secretary, NORB BRUEMMER,
who is within shouting distance of
our printer. He brings to that
office the same skills, enthusiasm
and efficiency that has been his
trade mark as Unit Rep. of the
43rd, member of the committee
for the revision of the constitution
and bylaws and as Director-at-
Large within the Association. He
also was very successful in the
business world before his retire-
ment.
At St. Louis our fifth chapter,
to be known as the Northcentral
Chapter was approved by our
immediate past-president. ART
HANSON is serving as tempor-
ary chairman of that chapter.
During the coming year, JACK
MILLER, is going to investi-
gate the feasibility of a sixth
chapter in the Northwest. If he is
successful I shall be happy to
