In a letter to Jim Moulder from John
King, Sv. Btry, we received the sad
word that we were again too late in
finding one of our 494th buddies. Max
Wilkey of Hq. Btry was fatally injured in
an auto accident last year in Abilene,
Texas. He worked for the telephone
company there until his death. John says
that Max was his only contact with the
12th and vice versa as they were both in
the dark about the activities of the
Association. You will remember Max as
Col. Wymans jeep driver during the
Tennessee Maneuvers. Max was a good
soldier and a friend to all who knew him
and will be remembered in our thoughts
and recollections of the days gone by.
May he have Eternal Peace and Rest.
John and Mavis Cheefetz sent dues,
booster and news and a big "Hello" to all
their buddies of A Btry and the 494th.
As you all know Mavis was severely
injured in an auto accident on May 10th
and has been in a body brace all summer.
John is happy to say that she is coming
along very well and they hope to be with
us in Philly. He states that recovery
can't be far off, she has recovered to the
point of giving him orders! We missed
you at the reunion and will be looking
forward to seeing you in 1977.
In the letter from John King, Sv, he
says that he and wife, Aggie have been
amazed and pleased to get all the
information on the 12th and its activities.
He had no idea until May that of this
year that the Association was still
active. (John, the 12th is not only active,
it is alive and growing!) John and Aggie
have three children, one son and two
daughters. Their son lives in Houston
and the daughters live in Dallas. John
and Aggie moved to Abilene in Oct 1954
and bought into the Motz and Curtis
Insurance Agency. He says all has been
going well since he has been in Abilene
and now that the kids are all through
college he can relax on that part of his
life. Glad to hear that you need more to
do, John, we need all the help we can get
in the 494th and the Association! Glad to
have Aggie and you back home!
Walt and Ellen Litwinski, A Btry,
wrote to say how much they enjoyed
reunion and to say that they are
looking forward to seeing everyone in
Philly in 1977. Walt and Ellens'
daughter was married in September
and we send our congratulations to all
from the 494th. Walt and Ellen have
made an album of the pictures they
took at the reunion and will bring it to
the reunion in Philly. As Ellen puts it,
"A few good laughs for everyone"!
Talking about laughing, Ellen, you
have the cheer and laughter market
cornered!
At the reunion, our A Btry Secretary,
Joe Stankunas was asked to check into
the possibilities of getting a tank to be
placed at Fort Campbell, Ky. as a
memorial of the 12th Armored Division.
Well, our indomitable Joe has done again
the job for his buddies of the 12th, cut
through the ever present red tape and
got the tank! The tank will be shipped to
Fort Campbell and when it reaches
there, the curator will have a pad ready
for its display. Joe deserves a big thanks
from all Hellcats for the job he did on
this task for the 12th. Thanks, Joe, from
all of us, you are a true Hellcat!
Our two men of the cloth from the
494th have both started building
projects in their respective churches.
Rev. Bob and Lorraine Miller are trying
to build more room for the Sunday
School and Kindergarten of the
Southwest Community Church in Miami,
Fla. Rev. Jim and Thelma Bartz are
starting a building project to add to the
Nazarene Church in Cheyenne, Wyo.
Both of our ministers are A Btry
members of the 494th. Rev. Bob can be
reached by writing to him at 4000 SW
103rd Ct., Miami, Fla. 33165 and Rev.
Jim at 2222 Russell Ave., Cheyenne,
Wyo. 82001.
Joe Stankunas just can't seem to slow
down! He is now writing a column
(Veteran's Billboard) for the 1st
Armored Division. He also writes a
column for the Massachusetts VFW
News as well. He says not to worry, he
will save time so that A Btry will not
want! Guess you boys in A will see that
Joe will have all the help he needs!
Emily Cullen of A Btry, Joe's better
half had an operation shortly after the
reunion and from all reports is on the
way to recovery. Send her a card at 104
West End Ave., Libertyville, 111. 60048,
and wish her well.
The next reunion will be on us before
we know it and a host battery for the
Artillery Room is needed. Any battery
of the 493rd, 494th, or 495th who would
like to act in this capacity for your
buddies, please contact either Jim
Moulder or Ken Bradstreet as soon as
possible. We will fill you in on the parti-
culars and you can add any new wrinkles
that will help all the redlegs enjoy their
days in Philly. Don't wait, be a part of
making the Artillery of the 12th more
than just the greatest three batallions in
the world! It will make you feel good!
We still can use any pictures that you
may wish to donate to the 494th History
Books. The groups around the display
tables are getting bigger each year and
the looks of enjoyment and memory
are keeping pace.
Each Battery of the 494th was well
represented at the 30th Reunion and this
was the first time in reunion history that
it has been. It is a tribute to the Hellcats
of the 494th that this could be done. The
oldtime Artillery spirit and comradrie is
alive in the batallion and growing due to
the cooperation and willingness of every
Hellcat and Hellkitten of the 494th! In
the years to come, with God's help, the
494th will continue to be a close knit
group of "BUDDIES".
Until next month, take care and
remember — write your Rep., without
your news there can be no column. I wish
to thank each and everyone of you for
the help and cooperation that you have
given me in the past year and the honor
of being reelected to be your Unit
Representative for 1977.1 also thank you
for your confidence in electing me to
represent the Artillery as Represent-
ative on the Executive Council.
Historian's Museum
of
Memories
We wish to remember and pay tribute
to our shut-in and sick Hellcats, those
who are Association members and those
who are not. We have a valuable
camaraderie with those who have been
in pain and misery for years, whether
military related, accident caused, or just
sick. These people are all an important
part of our 12th Armored family and
without c£hem, our group would be
decidedly weaker. There are several
people not in the greatest health, who
have been a vital force in the
perpetuation of our Association. Some of
the others who have not been well
enough to be active, have been all but
forgotten by the rest due to lack of
communication.
We realize that the Hellcat shut-ins
read and have read to them with envy,
the activities enjoyed by some in which
they themselves are unable to
participate. For those who are unable to
write to a unit rep., a little aid from wife
or son or daughter, or whoever will help,
can cause news to be exchanged with the
rest of the guys.
After all, not one of us will be around
forever, so let's take advantage of every
opportunity to aid, comfort, and think
with compassion, on all of our less
fortunate Hellcats.
We wish that each of those will be
remembered in our thoughts and
prayers and that they will be aware of
our concern.
