V.F.W. Hopes High For Separate
Veterans' Affairs Committee In Senate
(Special to the 12th AD Association)
Washington, DC — (January 6,1977)
— "I am most optimistic that the Senate
Veterans' Affairs Committee will
continue as a separate unit under the
reorganization of the Senate
committee system," said R.D.
"Bulldog" Smith, National Comman-
der-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars.
"I base my hopes on face-to-face
meetings with a majority of the
senators by V.F.W. representatives
from each of the states, including
Hawaii and Alaska, brought into
Washington this week to express local
membership's need for a separate and
distinct Senate Veterans' Affairs
Committee.
"The thought that the committee
would be placed under a proposed
Human Resources Committee is
deplorable. Veterans' programs are so
complicated and broad in nature that
they deserve deliberation by a full
committee in the Senate.
"We were the only organization that I
am aware of which had Past
Commanders-in-Chief and represen-
tatives from every state to personally
talk with their senators about this
crucial problem.
"After three days of discussions, I
can state that 57 senators expressed
the opinion that the Senate Veterans'
Affairs Committee should remain
separate and distinct, four did so also,
but with stipulations. Twenty-six were
undecided, eight would not answer
letters or requests for appointments
and only five expressed disapproval for
a separate and full committee."
The following expressions for
keeping the Senate Veterans' Affairs

committee in the reorganization of the

-We open this month's column with
belated Seasons Greetings to all and
hope everyone had an enjoyable
Christmas and that the New Year has
been kind so far. It's been hard to get
used to copy deadlines and what copy
goes to what issues. I just realized that I
have to send these greetings with the
September copy.
From a very light mail bag this month
comes a very nice letter from John
Melfi (CCB) who writes from
Columbus, OH. At this reading he is
now in Florida for the winter months.
Thank you for the nice things you said
about me taking on this assignment.
He enjoyed reading about the Hellcat
Holiday show and said it brought back
many fond memories. John is going to
check a movie critic on a Miami TV
station that he thinks could be Lt. Sam
Hirsch who staged and directed the
show. I sent you a copy of the Playbill,
John, I trust you received it okay.
My old buddy Julie Bernstein (Div.
Hq.) and his Mrs. send me a beautiful
Christmas card and his hopes that he
sees me in Philly come summer. It's
pretty difficult for me to get away at
that time of the year but one never
knows what might happen by then.
Julie and I were practically together
every day of our army life. We even
came back to the states on the same
ship. I can never forget how seasick I
was on this Victory Ship and how he
kept insisting daily for nine days that "it
was all in my head." Remember the S.S.
Navajo?? His card comes from
Riverside, CA.
From Newton, IL comes a most
colorful and attractive Christmas card
from LaVerl and Virginia Kennedy. He
also reminisces with memories of the
