43RD ARMORED REGIMENT BASEBALL TEAM—GUESS WHO? ANYONE KNOW?
A few notes in with the Christmas
cards:
Cliff Hunter expects to retire in
January and to start a cross-country
tour in June and expects to make the
reunion in Philly. We will be looking
forward to seeing you. (With a fresh
canteen of ?)
Harriet and Henry Schule report that
all is well. She said it took awhile to get
over her experience with the chicken
bone she swallowed at our unit dinner
in Springfield and she did have a lot of
problems. Next time you eat in an
Italian restaurant try the lasagna or the
shrimp scampi. The entire Schule fam-
ily went deer hunting in November and
all were successful. That should take
care of a good part of the meat ration
for the winter.
Quentin Shelton, sons and son-in-
law, visited Ralph Minnick to do a little
hunting. Quent said the hunting was
not too good but he had a nice visit with
Ralph. Quent isn't sure he can make
the reunion this year. (Try hard, we
need a treasurer for the company
fund.)
McKinley Foundation Chapel at the
University of Illinois was the scene of
the wedding of Debra Ann Stone and
David Dean Postelwait II on Oct. 31.
Debra is the daughter of D Company's
Jim and Betty Stone. (Please note
accompanying picture following a
candlelight service.)
You may recall in a previous column
we wrote that Don and Audrey Ford
passed up the reunion to visit
Colorado. Well, somebody up there
definitely likes the Fords because they
had left the Big Thompson Canyon
road just two hours before that terrible
tragedy took place and were ten miles
away at the time. Thank God for that.
Had dinner with Dot and Jiggs Sager
a few weeks ago and enjoyed the day
as we always do with those nice
people.
When you read this the holidays will
be over and things will have quieted
down so you should havea littletimeto
write. It gets discouraging seeing that
empty mail box all the time. All of you,
just take a few moments to let all of us
know what you are doing, what size
family you have, what work you do.
How about the retirement times that so
many of us are now reaching. Make
room for the youngsters as they need
all the spare room we can give them
just to live in this day and age. Just
drop a line to fill in the void spaces of
the news.

Here I am, 53 years old and to this
day I still cannotfigureoutwhereinthe
world the time goes. It seems like just
yesterday that I sat myself down to type
up the 44th Tk. Bn. column, and here it
is time to do it all over again! I don't
mean to sound as if I were complain-
ing, thank God that time does go by as
quickly as it does. Ever since the acci-
5
dent that I had back in November, 1973
I have not been able to do much of
anything. I was in fear that time would
drag by ever so slowly but it hasn't. I
manage to keep myself quite busy with
reading anything and everything that I
can get my hands on. I do a little paint
by number painting; I was always
under the impression that it would be
very simple and boring, but believe me,
it isn't, and too, it is not all that easy to
do, especially when you get into the
larger scenes with a great deal of detail.
I also keep quite busy with my model
railroading. That by the way reminds
me, I am still in the market for any old
Lionel and American Flyer trains,
rolling stock, and also accessories.
Not too long ago, I received a short
note from a Louis Magnani of 2322
Plumb 1st. Street, in Brooklyn, NY
11229. Louis informs me that he was in
HQ Co. with the 44th Tk. Bn. He saw my
ad in the DAV and also mentioned that
the 44th Tk. Bn. will have a reunion in
Kansas City, KS this coming year.
Anyone who would like more detailed
information may get in touch with Dave
Scobie, 502 Barrington Road, Grosse
Pointe, Ml 48230. Louis Magnani
attended this past 44th Tk. Bn. reunion
and writes of how he met quite a few of
his old army day buddies.
I got a real nice card from Pappy
Bennett, Band/44th, and he tells me
that things are going along quite well
and would like to have me find out if
John Williams and Stanley Zatwaniski
recall the time they ran into the laundry
at B/17. John and Zat would up doing
the washing and also the ironing of the
suntans for the guys in the band. Man,
we may not have learned too much, but
we sure did have a mess of fun. God,
wouldn't it be great to be 18-19 years
old again? We may not have been too
swift but we sure knew how to live it up
with what little we had to do it with.
As we all know this column would
not be complete without some news
from Ben Frank. Well — have no fear,
ole Ben's been here! Sureenough, I got
a great letter from Ben way down in old
Mexico. Boy, that Ben is always there
when you need him. I sure do wish that
I had a few more 44th Tankers like Ben;
this column would be a lot easiertoget
together. Ben sends along two
snapshots, one taken in 1946, the other
at Ben's daughter Marcela's wedding
on July 3, 1976. As you can well see, we
have a much larger Ben today than we
had in 1946. Ana Frank must have been
doing one great job in the kitchen from
what I can see in the picture. All
kidding aside Ben, you look great! Ben
does ask that these two snapshots be
returned to him. Ben mentioned in his
letter that he can hardly wait to become
a grandfather. It is a great feeling Ben,
I've been through it three times and
now have three beautiful granddaugh-
ters and another two grandchildren
