Sgt. Mike Urbaniak, Sgt. Kubiak
(I sent this snap up to Mike in
Tucson, and in a tel. talk, we both
agree that Don must mean Sgt.
Kulak - can anyone else help to
confirm this?) myself and Smitty.
You will probably recognize them.
How the years have passed. If I
sent you a picture of myself now,
you wouldn't know me; I've put
on a lot of weight since 1945. I am
also enclosing a picture of the 2
dogs Lt. Colson picked up in
Tenn. when we were in the field. I
had to take care of them; you will
probably remember them. (Mike
U. and I both remember the dogs
and that they were called Pat and
Mike - anyone remember whatev-
er became of them?) I worked at
the G.E. plant here for 42 years
and retired 4V2 years ago and am
enjoying my retirement. I see
your letter is postmarked Tucson
- are you anywhere near Green
Valley - have a sister living there.
I would like to hear how many of
the original Co. made it thru the
war. I left the Co. in 1945 - 1 went
to a hospital in France and they
sent me home where I was oper-
ated on for a ruptured disc. I was
laid up for nearly six months and
then discharged. When I left the
Co. I left about 30 rolls of film in
my halftrack and never heard
what happened to them, also my
camera. I don't care about the
camera but would like the nega-
tives to my film as they were all
pictures taken overseas. I wonder
who got them. I will close for now
and I want to thank you for
dropping me a line and I would
like to hear from anybody that
was in Co. C/56. Sincerely, Don
Conkling, 6 Surrey Rd., Scotia,
NY 12302."
KUBIAK, Stanley S. originally
came from Detroit, Mich, and his
status is still listed as 'missing.'
The same is true for KULAK,
Joseph L. who came from New
Britain, CN. Anyone have any
information on these two fellows?
Conkling, in his letter, said he
did not care about having the
snaps returned to him so I promis-
ed them to Mike Urbaniak after
they are returned from the
Printer. Mike's response: "Abso-
lutely elated over picture - do not
have one like it; so sure will
appreciate having it. Amazing
how doors like this open up
memories." Mike is the most
cheerful fellow I have met in a
long time as at our age now we all
seem to have something to
complain about. Mike, pretty
much confined to his wheelchair
now, has an ulcer-like sore on his
foot which just doesn't want to

heal up properly. Ask him how he
is and his answer is always a
cheery 'getting along fine.'
In a short note from Ray
Garlock (C), he wrote that he is
thinking about attending the re-
union and plans to come down
from Phoenix the middle part of
May to talk with me about it but
on the way will stop off in Tuc-
son to 'shoot the bull a little while'
with Mike and Henri Urbaniak.
Letter from Ken Warnes
brought notice that Joseph Wasie-
ski (B) has sent in his '82-83' dues.
Joe wrote that he retired last
Sept. after 40 years service and is
enjoying the good life now; says
he is in the best of health at 66.
Ken suggests that any member
when in contact with a buddy
check to see if he is also an active
member; if not, see what you can
do about signing him up.
Ken also mentioned that
Warren Maue has sent in over 30
order blanks for 12th A.D. jackets
and Ken has forwarded to Maue
an order for a cap which he
received from a member. I have
not jacket or cap, maybe I'll get
around to it one day; but I did
send for the belt buckle and think
it is really great.
Since this is the month of June,
you all should be getting out your
check books and writing out that
$7.50 check for your '82-83'
DUES. Year after year all of us
Unit Reps keep stressing 'Get
your DUES in early' so as to
make the bookkeeping and filing
that much simpler for everyone.
The Reunion in St. Louis is just
weeks away, by the time you
receive this issue of HCN, and
your reservation should be in by
now.

a note from Jean Bragg (HQ) to
let Margaret and I know that she
and Chet will be with us in St.
Louis.
"WHAT'S A GRANDMA?"
A Grandma is a lady who has no
children of her own, so she likes
other people's little kids. A grand-
father is a man Grandma, who
goes for walks with little boys and
they talk about fishing and things
like that.
Grandmas don't have to do
anything except be there. They're
old so they shouldn't play hard. It
is enough if they drive us to the
supermarket where the pretend
horse is and have lots of dimes
ready. Or if they take us for
walks, they should slow down
past things like pretty leaves or
caterpillars. They should never
say "hurry up."
Usually they are fat, but not too
fat. They wear glasses and funny
underwear. They can take their
teeth and gums off. It is better if
they don't typewrite or play
cards, except with us. They don't
have to be smart, only answer
questions like why dogs hate cats,
and how come God isn't married.
They don't talk baby talk like
visitors do because it is hard to
understand. When they read to us
they don't skip words or mind if it
is the same story again.
Everybody should try to have a
Grandma, especially if you don't
have a television because Grand-
mas are the only grownups who
have got time for us.

Will I get any mail this coming
month with news for your
column?
The Booster Program was
created to reach out a helping
hand to all of our buddies who
find themselves in a financial
bind, unable to pay their member-
ship dues, but who want to be
part of our great Association.
That was the original interest
of the program, but we extended
it to shore up our buddies who
just happened to forget about the
due date and to prevent them
from becoming delinquents.
If you are now able to pay your
dues and you were extended a
crutch in the form of a Booster to
help you in your time of need,
then you are under an obligation
to make restitution so that we can
keep the program solvent.
No one wants to be a free-
loader and above all no true
Hellcat ever wants to fall in that
category.
If the Booster Program came to
your aid in your time of need and
you failed to honor your obliga-
tion to make restitution, then we
welcome you to do so right now.
Don't cheat yourself out of the
opportunity to wipe the slate
clean and to give yourself a fresh
start.
The Booster Program is a vital
program and must have eternal
life and we can make this a reality
if all of us as loyal members of our
Association honor our obligation.
