Thr.-e skeict-.n; of human bodies
have-been tu.earthed in about eigh-
teen ti,./ h. - - of earth in the Graves
gravel pi* several miles -outhwfst of
the city by gravel workers in the
pit. .1. I.. Slaughter, in charge of
the gravel hauling for the county
roads, reported the finding.
Two skel-etons were fund last week
and one was found Monday, of this
week. The tbodies were some thirty
yards apart and buried under about
eighteen inches of earth.
Theories advanced here lead to the
conclusion that the gravel bed was
ail,at cut burying, ground,, but not
for white people, as no one has any
- recollection of any such location.
Some of the oldest cit zen.« have been
1 a-ked about the- place but no one
-eems to know of its existence:
j It is thought probable that in old
j times Indians may have used this
' place or it is probable that some bat-
tle wa- waged there and the dead
,were hurriedly put under earth.
The skeleton found Monday was
buried in a hole reaching several
feet .n the ground, with th" head <>f
the body upward, as though n a
standing position. The skull was 1-8
inches under the soil a'tid. was crum-
bled when dug front the ground, but
the pie'eh have been preserved. Dig-
' girtg arour.d. the -keleton the (.• t,--
of the lower limbs were found, but
t'-'hcrally the h.-n.-, were in a state «.f'
:i>|van.'ed decay, nd resit in-,." that the
body had rested for many year- un-
der the sod.
