Additional Remarks:
[ Sources of Information Fort Sa ckton's Guard-house was built in I867 whhn
the location was reoccupied by troops and a new fort was built. The stonu were
taken from the "$ Mlile Resa", brought to the location by mu? 3 teams and wagons,
shaped into rectangular blocks and edged, and laid by stone masons with lime mIortar
prepared from a kiln fired by mesquite roots. Only the room for the guard detail was
provided with a fire-place and ventilation. The prisoners suffered from lack of ven-
til tion and heat- with no ventilation in the dungeon or sole-confinemrnt room.It
served as a prison for both soldiers and civilians unti the county jail was construct-
ed in 1883. The fort was abandoned in 1886. (Clayton Williams, micro-film of Fort Stockton
