70-Mile Speed Limit
In Effect August 23
AUSTIN—The director of the
Texas Department of Public Safety
«**rned motorists today "not to
take the new, higher speed limits
too literally" when they go into
effect August 23.
Col. Homer Garrison Jr. remind-
ed that "there are a multitude of
-circumstances and situations under
• which even the old limits were
,iao fast for safety."
"With more than two-thirds of
the Texas highway system under
:a 70-mile-per-hour daytime maxi-
mum speed for passenger cars and
r55 miles per hour at night, we wish
*r> appeal to all Texans to exer-
cise keen judgment and drive rea-
sonably and prudently regardless
.of what the signs say. The law pro-
hibits driving a vehicle too fast
Par existing conditions."
Miss Aurora Gonzales and aunt,
Mrs. Margaret Balderas, and Mrs.
Gloria Palacios and daughter San-
dra Ann of Houston were week
end vistors of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy
,'Qonzales, Sr.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gonzales and
daughter, Darlene, returned from
Houston Tuesday afternoon after a
three-day visit with relatives and
friends. They were accompanied

Early Destruction Of
Cotton Stalks Urged
All cotton producers are urged
to destroy their cotton stalks as
soon as possible due to heavy pink
bollworm numbers in some areas of
the county. The early destruction
of cotton stalk and bolls not only
aids in the reduction of the pink
bollworm number and other cotton
insects but also meets recommend-
ed soil mproving practices.
Standard rotary-type stalk shi-ed-
ders will kill up to 50 percent of
the larvae during the shredding op-
eration. Hot sunshine and hot soils
will kill a high percentage of pink
bollworms in shredded stalk and
boll residue when spread thinly on
the ground. The residue should
then be plowed under to a mini-
mum depth of 6 inches.
Early stalk destruction is a
"must" to protect the 2 million dol-
lar cotton industry in the county
from the pink bollworm another
year. So far, the plow-under dead-
line date for this year has not been
released, but in 1962 the stalk de-
struction deadline was October 2D.
Trail Riders To Trek
All riders are invited to attend
a trail ride from the City Park of
Point Comfort to the Olivia School-
house.
The ride will get underway at
9 a.m. Saturday, August 17.
A $1.00 ticket to the Olivia Vol-
unteer Fire Department's barbecue
at the Olivia Schoolhouse is all
that a person needs to be eligible
to make the trail ride.
Anyone wanting additional in-
formation should contact Wallace
Phillips, Jr. who will be acting
trail boss on the ride.
OIL, GAS-
(Continued From Page 1)
million was spent last year on geo-
physical crews using seismic de-
vices to probe the underground
formations of Matagorda County
for possible drilling locations.
Leasing adds many thousands of
dollars to the county's economy.
Tabulations by the International
Oil Scouts Association show major
companies in 1961 were paying
rentals on about 307,000 unhevelop-
ed acres, which comprise about
two-fifths of the county's area.
Royalty payments to Matagorda
County farmers, ranchers and oth-
er landowners are running at more
than $4.7 million annually, the
Association calculated.
Matagorda County producers and
royalty owners also make a sizable
contribution to the support of state
government, with production tax
payments of more than $2.1 mil-
lion a year—some $919,000 from
oil and $1.2 million from gas.
Industry taxes likewise are im-
portant to the county government
and school districts in the county.
For instance, 64 per cent of the
local property taxes collected for
the Bay City Independent School
District comes from oil and gas
operators; 78 per cent at Palacios;
82 per cent at Tidehaven; and 85
per cent at Van Vleck.
A sizeable impact on the Mata-
gorda County economy has been
registered by petroleum industry
payrolls. About one out of every
three payroll dollars in the county
is derived from employment in oil
and gas work, according to figures
•from the Texas Employment Com-
mission. The industry payroll is
more than $5 million a year, with
the average employee receiving
more than $5,600 annually.
Six natural gasoline plants and
one cycling plant are operated in
the county, handling some 3813 mil-
lion cubic feet of gas a day.
Master Sgt. A. D. Emerson and
wife are visiting his mother, Mrs.
Louise Smith. Sgt. Emerson, who
served in Japan for three years,
will be stationed in Cherry Point,
N. C. until his retirement in No-
vember.
