THE PALACIOS BEACON
save and succeed!
So far, we have been unable to
discover a single instance where
the organization of the ^jJivic
League has bettered condition#:
in Palacios. Jt is true/theineaguei
was largely instrumental in the
election -of 'two -ladies on the:
School Board, - but it is too earl;/
te say that this is beneficial, as;
the two elected have, as yet, had;
no opportunity to .prove their
ability. Jn advocating the org-
anization of this body, we had in
mind particularly the cleaning-;'
up and beautifying of Palacios.
If the League has made any steps
in this direction tUey have been
most peculiarly -ri.uiot about it.
In a few isolated cases, it is true,
improvement has been made in
the appearance of residential
properties, biit. whether or not;
this was at -the suggestion of the
League is extremely doubtful.
The very prolific and "bounteous
crop of weeds in Palacios offers
a most profi-tablefield of endeav-
or.. We-do not mean by this that
the ladies should take hce and
rake and do the actual work
themselves. If they can get the
city council to see the light, it.
will help some, Failing this, it
'would seam a'^/rpabte to spend'
the funds of the League in an;
effort to •make* Palacios present-f
able to the eyes of visitors-and;
healthful to residents. Money
can be devoted to no better pur-i
pose.

The one thing absolutely ne-
cessary to sweeess rs the rugged
determination that makes one
grit his teeth, dinch his fist and
say "I can becaaase I will."
Your ptace in the world depends
not upon -eireuwstances but upon
you. Whether or not you will
attain a high position in the work
of your eheice; whether you will
give orders or take them; wheth-
er your pay will be '"wages" or
"salary'"—all this depends upon
your determination. First, last
and all the time, he wins who
turns a resolute face to the grim
old world and" answers its chal-
lenge with an unflinching "I can
8 .ccecd and 1 will."
The supply of "average" work-
men is usually greater than the
demand. That is why the un-
skilled live so often in dread of
idleness with its specters of hu-
miliation and discouragement.
The market for untrained help
grows narrower with every in-
vention of a lab';r-saving ma-
chine, and with'every "examina-
tion safeguard' adopted by states
or employers. The demand of
today is for business trained men
and women to? manage the busK
