Hoja Blanca Disease
Vector Survey Shows
No Signs in County
A report has just been received
from Weldon Newton, Extension
Entomologist, concerning the final
results of the 1962 Hoja Blanca
disease vector survey, according
to County Agent Norman Vestal.
The survey team inspected 29 rice
fields totaling 3,220 acres in Mata-
gorda County. No Sogata orizicola
were found in Texas during the
survey period. Vectors were dis-
covered in many fields in the
southern half of Louisiana, how-
ever.
The insect vector that transmits
the disease causes symptoms of
longtudinal pale yellow or white
stripes on the leaves. Sometimes
the leaves are mottled. Hoja Blanca
means white leaf.
