Crumbs From A Country Cupboard
By JESSE E. CAMPBELL
What's A Sport Anyway?
Sometimes I think I badly want
A second-handed Ford;
So I can drive to church betimes,
And help folks serve the Lord.
I badly want my coat-of-arms
There on its pannels bright—
So all may know as I speed by,
That I'm the stuff alright.
Then, just as I'm about to buy,
I meet some friend of mine—
Down in the mud up to his teeth!
His eyes with grief ashine;
Or wiggling there upon his back,
All grime from head to feet—
And spilling words I do declare
I wouldn't dare repeat!
This makes me tremble for the souls
Of friends who own that Ford!
So I recite the Couie'creed,
To square them with the Lord.
Yes, I have friends as good and true
As anyone may boast—
Who sometimes ask me out to spin
Along tnis glorious coast;
But, if I go, ('twere ever thus)
At farthest point from home-
Some thingumbob goes flooey—and,
I've got to hoof it home.
At other times, in blank despair,
With feelings sad and grim—
I hear them growl—that maybe we
Can get home on the rim!
But if perchance, we don't break down,
I'm sure to hear—alas—
These playful words too often sprung!
"Dammitt, we're out of gas."
So now, when dear friends beckon me
To come'and have a spin,
Or take an all-day ride with them,
I shake my'head and grin.
been wearisome waiting.
The rule of patience is a good one we gues3 and there's no
doubt in our minds that a grand prosperity climax is closing in up-
on us from all sides and directions —even merrily so—and this sub-
limest portion of the coast which consists of Jackson and Matagor-
da counties will be making some happy and also permanent history
—resulting for a lot of us in a perpetual condition of giggles.
Plant more figs and oranges this spring—and pray for oil.
important pact.
Mayor Campbell's recent wide awake article contained a high-
ly important paragraph that should be stressed over and over, that
it may become fixed in the mind of everybody interested in this
territory; and also be enlarged upon in all publicity stuff. We re-
fer to the conclusive proof that our grafting of citrus fruit on a
trifoliata base, is far superior to the sour orange. The former,
because of its dormant habit, renders us more immune from freez-
ing, and gives us a permanent advantage under equal conditions
over all sections of the country—even as Florida and the Valley,
where the sour orange must, seemingly, be used.

Some years ago a bright ''folder" blew,
Right into my restless sphere;
It held a picture called —"Tide-Haven"
That proved heaven was somewhere near!
Soon I drifted to whence it beckoned,
With voice sweet as some fairy myth!
And when I reached that spot enchanted,
Found the home of good old "Toe Print" Smith.
