By E. E. Duffy
The United States has four times as
many automobiles as all the rest of the
world combined.
The United States has nearly half
of the world's road mileage.
These two facts give what is com-
monly known as the highway problem.
Spring is approaching and all over
the country road-builders are oiling
up machinery. Many of these machines
are to build new pavements; all too
many will necessarily be used for re-
pbairing the havoc of freezing, thaw-
ing and rain. All too many machines
will devote their energy to the con-
struction of roads v/hich in a short
time will also require the never ending
attention of patching crews.
In point of money expenditures a
normal road construction season is ex-
pected. A survey shows that state gov-
ernments will make good progress in
pavement laying, but the character
of local road building activities is still
in doubt. One half of all road money
is expended by local communities, and
unfortunately it is the local commun-
ities that are faced with the great
maintenance burdens.
Local governments in general try
to please everybody by distributing
road activitis over the -entire local
area. But, as highway authorities have
been pointing out for years the attempt
to evenly distribute local road funds
has resulted in the widespread con-
struction of inferior roads which must
be repaired or rebuilt year after year.
On the other hand, a number of
counties, including Dyer county, Tenn.,
Chautauqua county, N. Y., Vermillion
and Champaign counties, 111., and Mis-
sissippi County, Mo., have progressed
satisfactorily on hard surfacing pro-
grams without burdensome taxation.
This was done by the simple expedient
of building fiine or ten foot hard sur-
faced pavements at a cost no greater
than is paid for full width inferior
roads. These narrow pavements, where
traffic is not very heavy, have been
found entirely practicable, capable of
year-round service, and of low upkeep
cost.

A 98-B de Luze Willys six uandard
sedan recently made a non-stop run
between Houston and San Antonio,
232 miles, in 3 hours and 37 minutes,
according to officials of Rice Motors,
Inc., Houston, under whose auspices
the run was made. S. W. Dykes piloted
the car on the run and carried with
him A. B. Brown, expert mechanic.
This time breaks all records for a
non-stop run between the two cities,
according to George F. Day, general
manager Rice Motors, Inc. Time of
leaving Houston was checked by the
main office of the Western Union and
time of arrival at San Antonio by the
main office of the Western Union of
that city.
This is the same car and pilot which
recently made a non-stop run between
these two cities, in second gear, in 5
hours and 30 minutes, according to
Rice Motors, Inc., officials. On this sec-
ond gear run no mechanic was carried.
On the record-breaking run the car
and pilot loft Houston at 2:,59 a.m. and
arrived at San Antonio at 6:36 a.m.
The car averaged a speed of 64.5 miles
per hour during the run, officials stat-
ed, and breaks all existing records by
five minutes, they said.
Both of the runs were made as spe-
cial features of demonstration week
participated in by Willys sixes and
Whippets over the entire United
States.

gation of the Christian faith.

surprise party on the twenty-sixth,
which was his birthday. A large num-
ber of his friends came in bringing
"eats" with them, which they served
with the assistance of Mrs. Hanys,
after everybody hod enjoyed an even-
ing of forty-two and other games.
The women of the Home Mission
Society will serve lunch at the school-
house Saturday to the voters and oth-
ers who may come in. The lunch will
consist of sandwiches, pie, doughnuts
coffee and cocoa, served cafeteria style,
at popular prices. The funds derived
from the lunch will go toward screen-
ing the church here.
Midfield School came out very well
in the County Meet, winner First place
in Tennis, and Relay Races, Second in
High School spelling, and Third in
Senior Girls and Junior Boy's Decla-
mation. On account of lack of equip-
ment we were debarred from many
of the entrys, so we are proud of our
youngsters, and if we get our new
school house and all equiped, we hope
to do better next year.
At the School election next Satur-
day Midfield voters will decide wheth-
er we will issue bonds for rebuilding
our school house which burned last
November. If the bonds carry, a larger
and better building will be erected, and
in time for the opening of the fall term
of school, we hope. Our population has
increased so in the past several years
that we probably will have five teach-
ers next term, as the Primary Depart-
ment has been very much over crowded
the past two terms.
"D you come from Boston?"
"Certainly not! I'm talking this
way because I cut my mouth on a
bottle."
