Coach Picket! Has 11 Lettermen Bad
For Pioneer Squad; K. Cook On Rosle;
WHARTON—Coach Tom Picket
sent his chargers out on the pra<
tice field for their first traininj
session Saturday, September 1. Th
first game of the season is Satui
day, September 15.
Coach Pickett took over th
reins as head coach at Whartoi
County Junior College in 1(159 dur
ing which his Pioneers won 5
lost 4, and tied 1. Kobert Jancik,
ppeedy halfback from Rosenberg,
was chosen on the Junior College
All-American Team, and Steve
Shaver of Houston, tackle, made
all-conference. Coach Pickett has
not had sx losing season.
In 1960 the Wharton County
Junior College Pioneers won 7, lost
2, and tied 1. James Whitten, half-
back and end from Dallas, once
$gain gave the Pioneers a repre-
sentative on the mythical Ail-
American junior college eleven.
Then, last year, an 11-1 season
record gave Coach Pickett and his
Pioneers one of the best junior
college records in the United States
and a high national ranking. Perry
Farley, halfback from Brackett-
yille; Mike Cooper, quarterback
from Houston; and Harbie Hanks,
guard from Eagle Lake; copped
Ail-American laurels.
Coach Pickett, before taking over
the controls of the Pioneers, had
eerved under Coach Johnnie
Frankie who is now head basket-
ball coach at Rice University. For
his three years as head coach at
Wharton, Coach Pickett has an en-
viable record of 23 wins, 7 losses,
and 2 ties, for a winning percent-
age of .750. Who can do better than
that?
Each year as head coach he has
seen one of his players chosen on
the Ail-American team and last
year, his Pioneers beat the best
that the South had to offer in the
Hospitality Rowl in Mississippi.

Floats For Boat Keys
Dropping a boat key overboard
leaves a boat owner in a bad pre-
dicament.
Tj keep lc;ys from sinking when
the unexpected happens attach an
ordinary fishing float or cork to
the key chain.
Cuts Cooking Time
Here's how you can do two cook-
ing jobs at the same time, when
preparing a camp meal.
Just put the eggs you plan to boil
in a plastic bag. Then suspend the
bag inside the pot of brewing
coffee.
Make sure the bag is suspended
deep enough to cover the eggs
with boiling water. Top of bag can
be held secure between the lid and
the pot.
When eggs are cooked, remove
and serve. Neither eggs nor coffee
are affected by the other in any
way.
Wear Dark Fishing Apparel
It's unwise to wear light or white
colored clothes when fishing.
Fish can see you coming for a
country mile if you have on con-
spicuous duds.
Khaki, green, or other dark
clothiri.c will help you slip up on
the big ones—unobserved.
