Tax office to close early Dec. 31
Shackelford County taxpayers
are reminded that they must pay
their 1991 property taxes by De-
cember 31 if they want to deduct
them from their 1991 income tax
returns.
The Shackelford County Ap-
praisal District office plans to be
open most of the day on Tuesday,
New Year's Eve, although they will
close two hours early at 2:30 p.m.
They will also be open during the
lunch hour instead of closing as
they normally do.
The early hours have been
posted in order that appraisal
district employees can finish the
lengthy year-end reports by a
"reasonable hour." Any payments
brought after that time can not be
accepted.
"The post office will be open for
regular hours on New Year's Eve,
so taxpayers who miss coming by
in person can mail their checks
and still have their receipts dated
December 31," said Bruce Bailey,
chief appraiser.
The post office will be open until
4:30 p.m. Tuesday and any pay-
ments received through the mail
that are postmarked on or before
the 31st will have receipts issued
as of the date of the postmark.
According to Bailey, 1990 taxes
are not past due until after Janu-
ary 31, 1992, but they have to be
paid prior to the end of the year in
order to deduct them off this year's
income tax returns.
Bailey stated that tax payments
are continuing to come in at a
slower rate than last year. And the
1990 collections at this point were
at the lowest point in the 11-year
history of the central appraisal
office.
By this time last year, $641,000
or 27 percent of the 1990 taxes had
come in. As of Monday, only 21

Eercent of the 1991 tax levy had
een collected, approximately
$558,000.
The total 1991 levy is $2.6 mil-
lion as compared to $2.4 million in
1990.
"If you want to pay your taxes
this year, it would help our staff a
great deal if you could bring them
in as soon as possible rather than
waiting until the 31st," Bailey re-
quested. "You would also be less
apt to have to wait in line and you
would be more likely to get a receipt
the same day."
The chief appraiser expects
[uite a few taxpayers to stream
rou^h the office in the few days
following Christmas.
The appraisal district office will
be open Thursday, the day after
Christmas, and Friday of this week,
as well as Monday and Tuesday of
next week.

THE GRINCH THAT STOLE CHRISTMAS...
