WE MADE IT
Whew! Telstar made it.
I couldn't lie prouder if I'd pushed the button that sent
the satellite into orbit.
As you probably know,
Telstar is the Hell System
satellite. It acts as a sort
of moving microwave re-
lay tower In space. Sig-
nals from the earth are re-
ceived hy the satellite,
amplified within it, and
then transmitted hack to
the ground.
Everyone here at the
telephone company had his
fingers crossed ths:t Tel-
star would be successful.
After all, that little 170-
pound ball opens a whole new world of communications pos-
sibilities. Voices, television pictures and data messages can
now leap thousands of miles In a new and exciting way.
It Wasn't Ea»y
Sitting back and reflecting on the many developments
that made Telstar possible, three things come to mind:
1. Since the end of World War II, the Hell System has
spent over one billion dollars for research and development.
2. Communications hy satellite would be Impossible
without six Hell System contributions—the Transistor, the
Solar Pattery, the traveling wave tube, ruby masers, the
waveguide, and new antennas for the ground stations.
3. The Hell System paid the National Aeronautics nnd
Space Administration for the launching of Telstar. No one
got a free ride.
I could go on and on about Telstar, but 1 II just make
one more comment:
1 nm convinced that if there's ever a better way of
providing communications-we'll do it.
