F'conorny could even be ef-
fected in our national defense,
which now takes about. 55 per
cent of our total expenditures.
Apparently real efforts are be-
ing made by Secretary of De-
fence McN'amara to bring
about economy in better man-
agement and administration.
National defense plus inter-
est on the national debt, plus
veterans benefits, plu.-j fixed
expenditures under the Farm
Program and other obligations
which must automatically be
■met, leaves a comrwntively
small percentage of ton ' s' end-

ment and discretion. Tlvse par-
ticular expenditures mentioned
above are those on which the
f'on"re<s can apply common
sense economy.
Of special interest to con-
servationists and fishermen:
The I'niversity of Georgia
through research and experi-
ments, has found that non-edi-
ble fi.<h can be eliminated
without harm to the good fish.
They have found they can do
this by smothering them. It is
niv understanding that this is
not done by catching them and
throwing a blanket over their
heads, hut rather by a process
known as Rodenone-base toxi-
cant. Just why it would affect
only carp, suckers and the like,
I am unable to explain, but it
is interesting.
To observe some activities
her" in Washington often re-
mind- one of what Will Rogers
once said when asked during
vVorld War I what he would do
about the submarine menace.
"Drain the Atlantic," be re-
plied. Asked how he would vro
about it, he said, "Leave that
to the technicians. I am only a
thinker."
