This column aims at becom
ing a broadbased non-violent
report of what is happening to
you and your neighbors with a
bit of teasing thrown in to
make folks read about it. The
tongue-in cheek use of the
word gossip is not what your
mother and the Bible warned
you against so don't gather
your skirts and back off with
that holier than-thou look on
your face when the snoop asks
"What's newzy, Suzy?" We
wouldn't hurt a fly...
There came a phone call from
a male voice in Duluth, Minn,
who thought 2-3492 was the
correct number of his sister,
Mrs. Garland Reed of Albany,
a name unfamiliar to us at that
time. Frankly curious, our call
next day paid off with this info:
Mrs. Reed, wife of a State
Highway Dept. employee, had
major surgery Wednesday, Oct.
8, in Abilene; the family has
two children ages 8 months and
6 years; they live at 306 N.
Main across the street from the
library; they have lived in
Albany for two years; Mrs. M.
C. Miller of Sweetwater is
staying here, caring for her
daughter's family. Our very
best wishes to Mrs. Reed for a
speedy recovery and we hope
her folks in Duluth reached
her. We gave them a correct
number. Now, this is one time
when curiousity did not kill a
cat...
Folks of the Macedonia
Baptist and the CME Churches
had their fellowship dinner Oct.
19. The Rev. E. McKinney had
been on vacation and was back
for the Sunday meeting. Lora
Bell Stapleton, formerly of
Albany was a special, guest
speaker....On the hunch that
James does not read Up and
Down the Street we sneak in a
small announcement: Call
2 3492 to report any upcoming
events that should appear in
the Abilene Reporter News.
Who could match Fronie's
coverage in the interest of
Albany? But we can try...
Mrs. Neva Balliew spent a
nice Sept. vacation in San
Antonio with her grand
daughter Cindy Balliew; going
for a week end were Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Balliew and Mr. and
Mrs. Stan Riley; Neva returned
home with them. This news are
inadvertantly left out of the
Oct. 1 issue; our apologies to
you dear people....
You ask what the Mc
Gaughey's have been doing
since retirement. Well, the
news nosey woman is about to
reveal all. John builds walk
ways, step ways, up ways and
down ways in their fabulous
garden and hoes weeds in
same; saws wood tor their two
fireplaces; has helped (in a
pinch) at the News and does
some fishing. He enjoys all
sports as a spectator on TV,
most of which are anathema to
Imalola. She is a homemaker
and loves to stay at home.
Imalola works indoors and
outdoors, She is the out
doingest quilter for which she
is or should be very famous.
She creates the quilt tops and
then sews the quilts in the
tiniest, most exquisite stitches
you can imagine. During rest
periods she relaxes: She digs in
the garden or propagates new
species of iris or knits sweaters
for children and grandchildren
or bakes batches of light bread
to distribute to friends. On
Sunday mornings the Mc
Gaughey's are at UMC in the
respective places as teachers of
the Gleaners and the Men's
Bible Class....Our Good Neigh
bor nomination goes to Chessa
Dodson who never runs out of
ways and means for helping
others....Kinsfolk visiting the
Lewallens and Garrets in the
past two weeks are Mrs. W.
M. Freeman of Lubbock, Cliff
Freeman of Dallas, John
Anderson of Breckenridge and

With all the high flown ideas
and suggestions for improving
the News Bland Turrter offers
this startling departure. He
thinks it would be great to
have a Saturday morning sheet
featuring football scores, those
of the Denver City Mustangs in
particular....New citizen is a
charming little boy weighing 6
lb. 1 oz. named Michael Chad
Parsons who will live with his
parents, Mike and Jana
Parsons. The proud grand
parents are Mr. and Mrs. V. E.
Hise and Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Parsons. While waiting at the
hospital for the appearance of
Michael Chad, Mr. Hise became
ill and was hospitalized in the
ICU at Hendricks. We sincerely
hope that Mr. Hise will have a
prompt recovery....

Taylor visited Chere recently...

David Shipman, the Aggie's

Richard King was admitted
Wednesday to the VA Hospital
in Big Spring. For the benefit
of Richard's many friends, his
address is Richard King, East
Wing 363, Bed 35, Veterans
Hospital, Big Spring, Texas
79720. Also in the King family,

and Clifford, is ill in Room 365,

two daughters in law and both
are named Pat? The Tucker's
week end guests were Joe,
Pat, Rhonda and Hayden
Tucker who moved from Waco
to Abilene not long since, and
Mr. and Mrs. Kay Walker of
Kermit....All of us enjoy going
to Bluebonnet Lodge to visit;
these friends are Albany's most
honored treasures....
Our one recollection of the
Chism Spring Hotel is when it
was th£ City Hotel and sat on
the corner about where the
Lone Star Gas Co. or the
postoffice is now located. The
year was 1931; we lived at
Cook Field and treated our
selves to an occasional movie.
Baby sitters were unheard of in
those days; our son enjoyed the
outings as much as we did. On
this particular evening at the
Aztec a violent rainstorm blew
in, cutting us off from home
until the creeks had a chance
to run down. So we spent the
night at the City Hotel
formerly the Chism Spring
Hotel. And that was my first
encounter with my good friend,
Lolo Burleson who ran the
establishment. Wish I could
remember the name of that
movie....Nadine Brewster and
daughter^, Wanda Middleton of
Mesquite and Wilda Wilie of
Fort Worth spent an exciting
Week end in old New Orleans;
Wilda was on a business
mission of recruiting med
students for John Peter Smith

Wanda went along for the fun
of it. They heard Pete Fountain
the great clarinetist and
wandered up and down Bour
bon and Canal Streets....
A priest who described
himself as a. concerned person
invited parishioners to turn in
their Saturday Night specials
as Sunday morning offerings.
Eighteen hand guns and
eighteen toy pistols were
offered and the attendance was
40 percent higher than normal.
The guns are to be melted into
small crosses and returned to
the owners. This is the first
sensible reaction we have heard
of in the issue of gun control
hanging in midair unanswered.
If all the bad guys will melt
their guns into crosses, then
we pure and pious people can
keep our firearms in good
conscience!....The Norreds
skipped off to the Eagle
Mountain Lake area on Laity
Sunday for a brief visit with
Laurel's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Ira Dobbins. We are trying to
work up the nerve to ask J O
where he went to church ...

originally contrived to punish
gossipers in Puritan New
England? Sounds a bit shivery..

the pretty green outfits and all
the other yummy colors in the
Specialty Shop's yellow corner..
Harold Cockrell, gardner at the
courthouse, keeps the offices
decorated with bouquets in
season which he has grown in
the beds on the lawn. Right
now it's zinnias and marigolds;
soon it will be mums. Harold
remembers when the Harris
Bros, built the cement walks
