Salazar to compete at state track
Sophomore Andres Salazar
will compete at the state track
meet as Albany's lone represen-
tative on Saturday.
Salazar will run the 400 meter
dash at 2:10 p.m. at Mike A.
Meyers Stadium on the campus
of the University of Texas in
Austin.
The Class A and Class 3A
athletes are competing during
the session that begins at noon
on Saturday. Tickets for the
sesson are $10 for adults and $5
for students.
Salazar had a qualifying time
from the regional meet in Abi-
lene of 52.01, which places him
in eighth place. However, he set
his personal best in the event of
50.90 at the area meet, which
also set a new school record.
"Andres is capable of running
better than he did at the re-
gional meet," said Coach Rod
Britting. "He should do well if he
runs to his potential."
The quiet student said that he
is not overly nervous and wants
to run well to represent the Al-
bany community and the school.
Salazar did not attend a state
qualifiers meet due to a conflict
with a school band trip, but the
coach said he put in a hard week
of practices last week.
"I have been letting him heal
up and rest some this week, but
we have talked a lot about how
he should run the race."
The following is a list of the
eight qualifiers and their times
from the regional round.
1. Trey Malone - Falls City,
50.42.
2. James Williams - Good-
rich, 51.43.
3. Andres Salazar - Albany,
52.01.
4. Joey Martinez - Hart,
49.31.
5. KeatonMata-Santo, 50.83.
6. Josiah Thompkins - Mc-
Leod, 51.20.
7. Jackie Reese-Rotan, 49.00.
8. Trinston Crawford-Grove-
ton, 51.59.

Lions ends season with loss to Eula
The Albany Lions baseball
team ended the 2006 season with
a close game against the district
champions, losing 3-2 to the Eula
Pirates.
Eula scored two runs in the
third, which the Lions didn't
answer until the seventh inning
when they knotted the game with
two runs of their own. The Pi-
rates scored a run in the bottom
of the seventh to take the win.
The bout was played in East-
land on May 2, and was sup-
posed to be followed by a tie-
LADY LION SOFTBALL
breaker game between Eula and
Baird to decide the district win-
ner. The second was postponed
by rain.
Eula and Baird played in Al-
bany last week, with the Pirates
winning 3-2 to take the district
title. Baird was the runner-up.
Jubal Hudson pitched for the
Lions against Eula, getting the
loss in the season finale.
"I was very pleased with how
we played," said Coach David
Fairchild. "We played well de-
fensively too, and Jubal and
Teagan Brown did a good job on
the mound."
Brown was leading hitter with
two singles for a run and one
RBI. Slone Balliew, David
Waller, Tom Hill, Preston Grun
and Blake Brewster each had a
hit for the Lions.
Albany ended the season with
a 13-5-2 record, including 6-4 in
district.
All-district selections will be
announced after Eula is elimi-
nated from the playoffs. Baird
lost in the bi-district round.
Softball season ends at bi-district
Albany's Lady Lion softball
team saw their season come to an
end at the bi-district playoff game
held May 2 in Mineral Wells, with
Albany falling 14-0 to Windthorst,
the defending state champions.
Windthorst scored four runs
hi' the first inning and bumped
the lead to 6-0 in the second
frame. The Lady Trojans put
four more runs on the board in
the fourth inning and capped
the win for four runs in the fifth.
"Windthorst is every bit as
talented as they have been the
past two years when we faced
them," said Coach Jimmy Fuen-
tes. "I would not be surprised if
they go on to win a third straight
state title."
Jackie Alvarez and Katelyn
Folsom both had a single in the
game for Albany.
"We gave it our best shot and
did nothing to hurt ourselves. It
is just unfortunate that we have
to draw a team the caliber of
Windthorst for our first round."
The Lady Lions ended the
season with a 12-8 record as the
runner-up in district.
"We had a very good year. I
was proud of the improvement
and competitiveness that we
showed and I am especially
pleased with the leadership that
our seniors provided."
The coach added that the se-
niors will be hard to replace.
Volleyball teams to host Eastland
f^'-The Albany junior high girls
won only one of their four volley-
ball games against Bangs on
Monday, May 8.
The local teams will host
Eastland in the final matches of
the season next Thursday, May
18 in the AHS gym. The games
will begin at 4:00 p.m.
The seventh grade B team
won against Bangs in two games
25-20, 25-19.
"They did a good job and
played their positions," com-
mented Coach Sara Wilson. "Our
serves are definitely improving."
The 7A girls lost in a close
contest, with scores of24-26,25-
20, 20-25.
"We just couldn't get focused
and let the third game slip away
from us," said Wilson. "We need
to work on our passing and serv-
ing, but at the same time, the
girls played hard."
At the eighth grade level, the
B team lost 20-25, 25-12,14-16,
while the A team was defeated
20-25, 25-18, 6-15.
"We didn't play well at all,"
related Coach Paul Johnston. "Our
passes and sets were not on, which
in turn hurt our chances to hit."
