Iu last week's issue of the Novvs,
there appeared an article, evidencing
that there had arisen in the fariiie im-
agination of some illustrious resident
in Ignorance, Gaul Co., the idea that
there has beeome onlv of late '•der-
vishons" in "sositie.
The
writer
and his non de plume has no doubt
caused considerable discussion and
while the writer of this does not pre-
tend to know the author of the former
article, nor make any comparison,
it doesseemto him, thiit it
forcibly reminds one of an
expression of the noted Sam
Jones—that when you hear a person
running him down you may safely
say "there goes one of Sam Jones' hit
dogg." No deubt ''Grimes. Polench"
has great philanthropic ideas, and an
honest endeavor to see wrongs right-
od which is all in very good order,
but the same burning desire to see no
injustice perpetrated upon anyone
moves the undersigned (who is an en-
tirely disinterested person so far as
the main theme of "Grimes Po-
lench's" article is concerned), to take
issue with Grimes and endeavor to
show him (or her as the case may be)
wherein they are wrong. The article
referred to is simply and solely a
strike at the club organized by some
of the girls of this town. This is it
in a nut shell, it is plain to be seen—
and if our friend Grimes be a man,
and an honest one, as we have no
reason to doubt, surelv some day he
will repent for attacking a party of
innocent and unoffending girls. Sure-
ly American chivalry has set no such
example or will uphold it. But Amer-
ican chivalry will defend such attacks
as the one referred to.
It grieves our friend Grimes that
some of the girls have seen tit to
gather at different places, and it may
be have picnics and the like as he
boldly chaiges. For the sake of an
argument then lets admit that they
"laff an talk an fus an diskuss means
of ropin in the boys.'! Their
meetings were supposod to be private ;
how did Grimes obtain his informa-
tion? Well, if Grimes is a
member of the lovely fair
sex, permit us to ask that she examiue
her own heart, and see if she can re-
call any ip'itance where she ever
permitted I' yself to think on the
subject of v toother she "liked the
boys" or not\\ and has she (or h«)
ever on a picnic excursion or any-
thing of the kind where there weie
only a few? and if so, would he have
taken umbrage Pt Jhe remark of some
one els'j who would charge that
Grimes Polench's "skin w^s stuff ful
ov formalism," that he
.elf better that others
didn'l ask everybody
him
rS I say, not as I do?- Has it
come to the state of^ affairs in the
great free country when a person or
any uuuibor of persons cannot meet
and talk in any way they like without
having it said that they are "stuck
up" ov think themselves better than
others? Grimes boldly charges that
the organization of girls club in his
town has caused some of the best
girls of the town to be left out
"cleen, cleer out" of "sosietie." The
writer of this unconditionly and posi-
tively denies that girls or set of girls
should have or has the power to leave
"sum ov our best girls cleen, cleer
out ov sosietip." Hut if a girl or set
of girls will sit down and hold their
hands making no effort in any direc
tion, they may not expect any one to
take it upon themselves to push their
cause, but there is a custom that says,
"help yourself and you'll always then
find others to help you."
The writer of tins has no gray hairs
—is not quite 60 years old, nor has
he the faculty of spelling that Grimes
enjoys, but wishes to see no one un
justly accused or censured, and with
out the knowledge or consent of the
club he chooses to call the p d q's, in
fact without the solicitation of any
one, writes this begging that grimes
will turn his article over, then reread
it from any other paint of view than a
selfish one, and see if he hasn't un-
justly accused some of the fair young
ladies of whom no one dare question
above reproach, of doing things that
Grimes herself or himself would not
do and think it nothing out of the
way.
I have lived in Albany for twenty
years more or less, and, though not a
persistent participant in the "giddy
<vhirl(?) of society," had congratula-
ted myself that I was sufficiently
acquainted to be familiar with the
rules or workings of the young people
in this particular, but it has escaped
my observation entirely if the evils of
which our friend Grimes complains,
so bitterly are extant, and I think if
tbe matter should be sifted out, it
would be found that some one had
been unintentionally offended or else
and indeed more likely, the fault is in
some idle talebearer, whose occupa-
tion it is to stir up dissention and to
know and talk about everybody's
business instead of their own.
I contend that there is the trouble,
"nd that there is a just cause and
mbre cause, for complaint of this ev il
in our own town than there is of the
evils that Grimes protests against.
And what is here written is without
"fear of punishment or hope of
reward." "Yourn"
For justice to all.
X Ray.
