WORDS about the WORD
written by local pastors
By Janet Chapman
Maranatha Fellowship
A man fell asleep on his couch
his children put a piece of
pifflburger cheese on his mous-
•JiShe. When he woke up, he
smelled something terribly
jjjxpng and ran through his house
yelling. "Something in this room
stinks!" Unable to locate the
trouble, he went out on the front
-porch and yelled, "The whole
world stinks!" He didn't realize
that all it took to find the trouble
was to look in the mirror.
We can sometimes feel like
things in life stink and even get
ijfcthe point that we think the
'%Kole world stinks. We just need
to look in the mirror and we'll
•fryl the real problem - the world
«9i)esn't stink after all, just our
attitude does.
We may not be able to control
• what comes to us in life, where
■ we work, where we live or how
people treat us; but one thing we
can control and that is our atti-
tude. Our attitude determines
our outcome, so we need to make
sure that ours is good. We can
choose to focus upon the positive
or the negative things in life and
what we choose to focus on will
determine our attitude.
The world can be a very cold
place and it will do all it can to
pressure us into a miserable at-
titude. There will always be
enough injustice and irritation
that will tempt us to murmur,
complain, criticize or even rebel.
However, life also has positive
aspects that will inspire us to
choose to be thankful, loving and
content. It is our choice which
one we will yield to.
Attitude reveals the person
we truly are. We can sometimes
put on external good behavior,
but inside we can be a mess. God
is concerned with the attitude of
our heart because this is where
the true person resides. Our goal
should not be just a make-over,
but a heart transformation.
God is concerned with the at:
titude of our heart because our
attitude will predict our future.
Proverbs 23:7 says, "...as a man
thinks in his heart, so is he." We
can't think in a critical, nega-
tive, faultfinding, complaining
way without becoming that per-
son. We've heard the expression,
"We are what we eat," but "we
are also what we think.1"
The best place to start with a
good attitude is before God, re-
penting of all our wrong atti-
tudes and then ask God to em-
power us to choose what is right.
Sometimes we have lived with
wrong attitudes for so long that
we can find ourselves in denial.
We can deny our need to help,
but we have to realize that we
cannot change what we do not
acknowledge. All we have to do
is to ask God and allow Him to
search our hearts and He will
bring things to light.
Wrong attitudes can wither
our heart and cause dryness. A
right attitude brings refreshing
and waters the soil of our heart.
It all depends on what we choose
for the landscape of our life. We
choose our attitudes - they don't
choose us.

Buttercups
by Sport Townsend
When I mow the yard, The buttercups make me cry
because they make me realize that someday i, too, must die.
They look so beautiful standing there in the wind.
They make me feel so happy, as i watch them sway and bend.
They look so sad, Lying there on the ground.
I know something you don't know, When my time comes around,
because i saved the seeds of those little buttercups
That day I mowed them down.
When we get to that home on high.
god will provide for all our needs.
Then i can open up my hand
And find those little buttercup seeds.
