8th grade Cubs pick up tourney title

The Albany eighth grade Cubs
brought home the championship
trophy from the Baird tourna
merit last Saturday after defeat-
ing both the host team and
Throckmorton {
They kept their record clean
with a win over Haskell Monday
night in district action. The
eighth graders are now 5-0 for
the season
The other three junior high
boys teams lost on Monday, but
all played close games against
their Haskell opponents.
This Saturday will be the sev-
enth graders' turnto compete in
a Baird tourney. All four teams
will travel to Hamlin for games
on Monday, December 11. The
7B team will begin the action at
4:30 p m.
Tournament Results
The 8A Cubs had three play-
ers scoring in double digits as
the local boys pulled away from
Baird in the third quarter on
their way to a 47-34 victory. They
had been behind 23-22 at the
half.
Zane Johnston was the top
scorer with 14 points, followed
closely by Mike Wilson with 13
Cody Walker was credited with
10.
Defensively, coaches cited
Spencer Balliew and James
Chavira for their efforts.
Albany played Throckmorton
for the tournament title, domi-
nating the game and finishing
with a 52-30 win
Wilson put in 18 points, while
Johnston had 16

Albany vs. Haskell
The same team put Haskell
oi) ice in Monday night action,
totalling controlling the first
quarter with a 21-8 score before
the Indians finally came alive.
The game ended with a 41-34
victory
Wilson recorded 20 p'oints,
with Walkercontributing 13 and
Johnston 10. Balliew and Alex
Rodriguez were named as de-
fensive standouts
The eighth grade B team
couldn't buy a basket in the fi
nal few minutes of their close
22-21 loss, even though they had
led throughout much of the con-
test.
Top scorers were Jake Will-
iams with seven and Tyrell Shoaf
with six
The 7A boys also lost a close
contest, finishing at 32-29 after
a low scoring third quarter
Scoring was fairly even among
the players, with Chris Blair
puttingin seven points, Donovan
Clevengersix.and Russell Baker
and Lino Martinez five each
"This was a tough loss," re
lated Coach Womack "We had a
three-point shot roll in and out
of the basket as time expired."
The seventh grade B team
boys were on the losing end of a
25-19 score, even though they
came back to outscore Haskell
in the second half of play.
Tim Wiloth put 11 points on
the board for the Cubs
Girls post losses
The Albany eighth grade Lady
Cubs suffered losses to Baird
and Stamford in tournament
games in Baird last weekend
and then fell to Haskell in regu-
lar action on Monday night
The seventh grade A team
also lost to Haskell, while the
combined B team hosted Throck-
morton and posted a loss as well.
The seventh grade girls will
take their turn at the Baird tour
nament this Saturday, then on
Monday, December 11, all the
teams will be at home against
Hamlin in district play. Games
will start in the AHS gym at
4:30 p.m.

The eighth graders dropped
their tournament game 46-21 to
the host team, struggling from
the outset to overcome a 18-4
first quarter deficit.
Shelby Jones recorded eight
points for the Lady Cubs, while
Stormi Hare put in six
The local girls fared no better
against Stamford, finishing on
the short end of a lopsided .'<8 13
score.
Patti Hargett was responsible
for four points, with Jones and
Megan Anderson recording three

The Lady Cubs couldn't
their shots to fall on Monday
night, ending with a 4f> 9 loss to
Haskell Anderson and Hare
were cited by Coach Monica
Kaufmann for their efforts on
offense, while Hargett and Jones
were mentioned for rebounding
The 7A girls recorded a close
23-20 loss to Haskell, with
Rachel Scarbrough putting in
14 points during the contest
On defense, Coach Sara Wil
son stated that Amelia Johnson,
Samini Whitt and Charissa Vier
,tel showed "great hustle."
"1 was pleased with this
team,"commented Wilson "They
are improving every game."
A combined B team hosted
Throckmorton on the same
night, losing to their opponents
