New Task Force chairman asks for community commitment
Dear Editor:
HBO advertises the liubjed.
matter of its new endeavor, 'Six
Feet Under," as the one most
people do not want to deal with
I think there is one that tops
this hob-s. no abuse. Feeling
this way, why would 1 choose to
accept the responsibility as
chajj .nun of (he Albany Drug
and Alcohol Abuse Task Force?
I am not sure even I fully under-
stand why, but to the extent I
do, describee the direction the
Task Force will be taking over
the next couple of years.
For one reason I see this f -
an expression of my faith and
point of service. Second, I feel I
cajttmafce a difference From my
perspective, alcohol is clearly the
overtvh<i<imirij culprit in tbo ■
fight against substance abuse.
Nothing) hort of a complete re
> form in our a ttitude as a Bocktly
towards it will < hange the dev
ajstation it creates on a daily
haul bad. 1 J. nil)/
cannot rcay 1 have not abused
the privilege our society offers
with r< spectjo using alcohol. 1
include "good* because it is pos-
sible having to include myself
as part of the problem will lead
others to admit the same. Tak-
ing responsibility for where we
are individually as a eommu
nity and society with respect to
this subject is the focal point of
the Task Force.
Using alcohol has been com-
pare to smoking to illustrate the
possibility of where ouraltitude
as a society,can go; 1 personally
stop short of saying its use has
no redeeming value and should
not be used - period, It would be
easier if this were true.. Many
within the 'hurcfc in general
have a very s trong view of this.
To the extent this attitude alone
is used to exert control, J believe
has and continues to be part of
our attitude problem To those
who use alcohol, even casually,
symbolically or 'as prescribed, 1
would say we assume, an im
mouse responsibility, the lack
of which our society j's just be
ginning to react to,
While my personal belief's do
not reflect the position of the
Task f orce -- there is no official
"position," theTaiik Force abso-
lutely Supports respecting, the
law whit h governs the use and
defines the standard associated
With its use. At a minimum we
should all he able to agree this is
a common starting point How
different life would be if these
la ws were simply respected and
observed!
Finally, as a community we
have emphasized educating our

an important part of their in-
struction our example bb adults

what our young people want is a
clear understanding of what our
individual position is and see
that we demonstrate it by our
actions, In defining this, we may

that we need to change.
