RE- Proponed (vopyrighl Tax
flear Cable Television
Subscriber:
Ia-gistat.ion has been intro
ducU-d in Congress which, if it
becomes law, will place an
additional tax" on cable
television viewing This "tax
will be in the form of
copyright payments to the
owner of the programs you
watch on the cable In
essence, you will be discrim
inated against because you
watch your programs on a
CATV system
Presently the copyright
owner indirectly is paid for his
program by the sponsor of his
broadcast program This
payment is ultimately passed
on the consumer in the form of
the price paid for the product
purchased The same copy
right owner would be
extracting a second fee from
the cable operator again,
ultimately charged to the
consumer m the form of
Jhigher rate- for cable
television service, For the
public to tie forced tri pay for
two tickets tn the same
performance is inherently
'unfair and for copyright
owners to unjustly enrich
!-hemsc;lve- a.t the expense of
the public is fundamentally
companies that own substan
tially 100 per cent of the
programs you view on
television These are the "fat
cats' that would benefit from
the tax
We are asking all our
subscribers to help us keep
the cost of cable television
down by helping us defeat the
proposed copyright "tax
This can be done by writing
your Congressman and Sen
ators to inform them of your
feelings on this matter For
ytjur convenience the follow
ing is a list of your
representatives and their
addresses:
