Hooker art featured at The Grace
A unique and beautiful quilt
exhibit will adorn the walls at
The£Grace Museum beginning
Sq$§rday, July 29 American
Pattern Paintings: Wooden
Quilts features the work of Abi-
lene and Albany native Fay Jean
Hooker.
Hooker's fascination with
wood, paint and quilts led her to
develop an innovative approach
to contemporary quiltmaking.
The^artist refers to herself as a
"wood quilter" when she is work-
in* in her studio.
*3 use the painted wood as my
fabric, the placing and gluing of
pieces as my quilting pro-
cess, and the completed con-
struction as my interpretation
o£a contemporary American wall
quilt," she said.
HHooker was one of 24 Ameri-
can artists selected to exhibit in
the First International Biennale
of Contemporary Art in Arad,
Romania in 2005.
Hooker grew up in Abilene
and Albany, but her travels have
taken her to New York City and
Washington, D.C. She moved to
the eastern shore of Maryland
in 1996 where she currently lives
and works in her studio - a con-
verted barn.

ties, visit the exhibit, and then
have play time in The Grace's

Aug. 25 set as ACT signup deadline
The next ACT test will be
administered on September 16,
2006.
College-bound high school
students who wish to take the
exam must register by August
18 - the deadline for having the
registration postmarked.
There is a late registration
postmark deadline of August 25,
but an extra fee is charged for
late registrations. Students can
register online at www.act
student.org, or registration
forms can be picked up at high
school guidance counseling of-
fices.
The cost is $29 for the tradi-
tional ACT and $43 for students

leges require a writing score but
many don't, so students should
find out the requirements of pro-
spective colleges before register-'
ing for the exam.

virtually all U.S. colleges and
universities, including all Ivy
League schools.
ACT's website (www.actstu-

tion, sample tests and the op-'
portunity to order inexpensive'
test prep materials.
