NSES parents to meet with teachers
Parents of Nancy Smith El-
ementary School students are
encouraged to attend special
parent forum times from 5:00 to
6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August
10, with the meetings split into
two separate times.
Teachers of pre-kindergarten
through second grade students
will meet in their rooms with
parents starting at 5:00 p.m.,
while third through sixth grade
parents are asked to gather in
those classrooms from 5:30 to
6:00 p.m.
Parents should be in the class-
rooms promptly at the stated
times in order to hear all the
information.
"This is more for the parents
than the students," said NSES
Principal Doyleen T errell. "Lists
will be posted on the front door
and the classroom windows, but
it isn't necessary for the stu-
dents to be there. They can bring
their things and sit with their
parents if they like."
She added that if parents have
students in more than one grade
level during the same time pe-
riod, they should split up and
attend separate sessions.
"I feel that one of any school's
biggest problems is lack of com-
munication," said Mrs. Terrell.
"If a parent hears about and
understands a new policy before
it actually affects their child, it's
less likely to become a problem.
This will be a good opportunity
for the teachers to explain their
expectations both academically
and behaviorally, along with the
state expectation for each grade
level. It's very important for par-
ents to attend. Please try to be
there."
NSES Schedule
Mrs. Terrell Stated that there
will be no changes in the dis-
missal times for elementary stu-
dents this year.
Classes will begin at 8:00 a.m.
each school day. Kindergarten
through second grade students
will be dismissed at 3:00 p.m.
Monday through Friday. A city
bus will run at that time.
Third through sixth grade
classes have a slightly different
schedule. They will be dismissed
at 3:40 p.m. the first four days of
the week and at 3:00 p.m. on
Fridays, the same schedule as
the local junior high and high
school classes.
Terrell explained that the bus
students will leave at 3:35 p.m.
Monday through Thursday so
that the buses would be at the
secondary campus by 3:40 p.m.
on those days. Other students
will be released at 3:40 p.m.
"This means that on Friday,
your kindergarten, first or sec-
ond grade student may ride a
different bus from the other four

days," said the principal. She
suggested that parents try to
pick up kindergarten students
on Fridays.
"It's difficult for the younger
students to understand why they
take a different bus, so some-
times it's easier to arrange a
pickup."
Terrell added that extra
teachers will ride on all buses
for the first six weeks to assist
the drivers and help students
learn the routine. "This serves
several purposes," she stated.
"The teachers learn where their
students live, the students are
less nervous about where they're
supposed to get off, and it sets a
standard of behavior for the
whole year."
Shortened Classes
Kindergarten and all pre-kin-
dergarten classes will be cut
short for the first four days of
school, August 14-17, to allow
the younger students a little time
to get adjusted to a full day of
school activities.
The students will eat lunch
early and will finish their activi-
ties by 12:00 noon. Parents can
pick them up at that time or
make arrangements for pickup.
Starting Friday, August 18,
regular school hours of 8:00 a.m.
to 3:00 p.m. will begin.
