Pace
County team wins 1st place
at 2005 Rattlesnake Roundup
An Albany rattlesnake
hunting team topped the list
at the recent Sweetwater
Rattlesnake Roundup for
bringing in the most pounds
of live rattlesnakes.
The snakes brought in by
the team of Jamie Nail, Bobby
Williams and Tom Belcher
weighed in at 1,665 pounds,
more than doubling the
weight of the group's third
place finish in 2004, when
they captured 750 pounds of
snakes.
Nail said this week that
the trio has been hunting to-
gether for about 15 years, and
not just for diamondbacks.
The Albany men had been
collecting rattlesnakes for a
month before the Sweetwater
event, snaring about 650 of
the reptiles in one pasture on
the Nail Ranch. They also
hunted on the Matthews and
Belcher ranches.
Nail stated that the group's
normal method is to find dens
on the south or east sides of
cliff, then look for snakes
stretched out to sun. They
use snake catchers to capture
the diamondbacks, placing
them in specially constructed
wooden boxes, three feet wide,
five feet long and six inches
deep until the Sweetwater
competition.
The longest snake they
found measured 59 inches,
compared with the 77-inch
winner brought in by Eric
Timaeus of Sweetwater.
For their entry, the Albany
men received a plaque along

with $800 in prize money.
In addition, the 1,665 pounds
of live rattlesnakes sold for
$5,500, and that wasn't even top
dollar, said Nail.
He explained that the first
2,000 pounds purchased by the
buyers at the roundup brings $5
per pound. The next 1,000
pounds brings $4 a pound, then
$3 on down to $1.50 per pound.
TheAlbany winners didn't get
their snakes in line for the
buyers until the price was on
the downward scale, receiv-
ing $4 for part of the entry
and $3 for most of the snakes.
A total of 10,212 pounds
was recorded during the four
days of the roundup, the first
time since 1992 that the total
topped the 10,000 pound
mark.
