Cubs split games against Rotan team
•A
Albany's junior high teams
split games in Rotan last week,
with the eighth grade falling 24-
22 and the seventh grade com-
ing home with an 18-0 win after
two quarters.
The Cubs will host Haskell in
their final home game of the
season starting at 4:00 p.m. in
Robert Nail Stadium on Thurs-
day. The seventh grade will play
first, followed by the eighth
grade and the junior varsity.
The eighth grade Cubs scored
on their opening drive of the
game. The tally came on a seven-
yard pass from Marcus Nabors
to Adrian Jasso. Justin Miller
scored the two pointer to put the
Cubs ahead 8-0.
Rotan returned the ensuing
kickoff for a touchdown and also
scored again to lead 16-8 by the
half.
Francisco Salazar scored in
the second half and also scored
the two-pointer, but the Cubs
still trailed 24-16.
The Cubs scored later on a
40-yard pass from Nabors to
Jasso. The two-point attempt
failed, leaving Rotan ahead 24-
22.
The Cubs attempted an onside
kick, but Rotan recovered the
ball. Wade Montgomery was able
to grab a loose ball with just over
a minute remaining in the game.
The clock ran out before the Cubs
could add to the score.
"It took us the first half before
we finally started executing,"
said Coach Jimmy Fuentes.
"Turnovers killed us in the first
half, but the guys fought hard in
the second half and we still had
a chance to win it in the end."
The seventh grade Cubs
played the same Rotan squad,
coming away with an 18-0 win
after two quarters.
The Cubs scored on a four-
yard run by Aaron Faith to get
on the board.
Albany scored again on a 40-
yard pass from Leif Johnston to
Jeremy Corbin to take the lead
to 12-0.
The Cubs stopped several
Rotan drives, with Johnston in-
tercepting a Rotan pass, and
Jeremy Corbin and Chris Alex-
ander both credited with fumble
recoveries during the game.
Faith scored the final touch-
down on a 20-yard run.
The seventh grade has a sea-
son record of 6-1.
