SPEAKING
"OF SPORTS
By DUB KINO
yes sir, it's getting pretty tlase
to t%t time. Sometime to-
morrow Coach Miller, 24 Ram
grldmen, Dick Crowley, and your
humble scribe will climb aboard
the new Ram bus and with eo-eap-
tain Munsy MeCarty stepping on
the gHs we'll be off on a long
jaunt. v
The destination, »« you all

little town some l!> miles south
of Amarillo, where''Coach Al
Biig&ett delights in putting; oat
"big bad Buffaloes" that can
nmke opposing teams sorry they
ever dropped in at Canyon for a
..football game.
And from all the talk we have
been able to gather while merely
meandering down the highway—
the Rams, bless
'em, are In for a

I seems to think
thjjj. Texas.>Wes-
' Dub King leyan doesn't
even have a chance. First, West
Texas State will have it all over
them in the experience depart-
ment. The Buffs have ,22 letter-
men back. And what lettermen!
Listen, those big bad Bisons didn't
lose but one game all last season
and that's something.
Just a tip to Co-captain McCarly.
Bray, and the rest of the Rams -
they're not. planning to lost; a sin-
gle gain? this season and a young
man, 'Bob Cox of Verrjon, seems
to think it'll be West Texar vs.
Texas Wesleyan Friday night—
and mostly West. Texai*!

^Joth teams will have a star
lineman out of this.week's
s;uni! with injuries. Newt Hayes
of the. Rams appears to be lost
for at least two more weeks.
The Buff's bounding co-captain,
Woodrow "Si" Marehlianks, sen-
, ior pivot man, is out of the same
with a bad knee injury which
may keep him ojut the remainder
of the season.
However, let's not try to sing the
bluea^too <much.. The Ranis-mac
mistakes against Weatherford Col"
lege last week. They made plen-
ty of them. But, if they are able
to profit by those blunders this
■weak and the rest of the season-
so much the better.

''phe trip this weekend will be
broken by a night's stay at
,V(jrnon. T. W. C. will work out
on the Lion's field Thursday night
and will climb out of bed early
Friday to leave for Amarillo.
Homer Craig, freshman > tackle
from North Side, told us this
morning while we were fooling
around the campus that he had a
„"bad" dream concerning West
Texas State last night. Now Hom-
er will really have to fight to keep
that dream from coming true.

Coyotes Surprisingly Strong'
Heavy favorites to take their op-

An easy victory for the West
Texas State gridders over the T.
W.C. Rams this weekend at Can-
yon was predicted here late last
•id^y night*hy a W.T.S.C. scout
after he had witnessed the' unim-
pressive victory of the Red and
Black over the Weatherford Junior
College Coyoes.
Dub King, Rambler sports writ-
er, gives West Texas State a 12-
point edge in the coming tilt. His
actual calculations,1 taking, into
consideration comparative scores,
yards gained, first downs, and other
statistics involved, give West Texas
State 40 actual points.

Practices Are Held
for Field Hockey
Field hockey practices are now
in progress under the supervision
of Misses De Rema Parker and
Maybelle Tinkle. Coaches are Maf-
gret Jobe and Catherine Wake-
field. Mildred Ely is director of
intramural sports; and Ruth Wis-
dom is sports manager.
Practices are held every Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday
afternoons at 4:30—and an occas-
ional practice is held at' 3:30. Two-
thirds practices are required in or-
der for one to get a numeral if
your team wins.
Ready Now!
ALL THE NEW
ard Payne will breeze in over
Trinity at Waxahachie. Masqflic
Home and Riverside will have a
close battle. We kinda like Mas-
onic Home in this one. Abilene
Christian will lose to St. Mary's at
San Antonio and as bad as we hate
to say - West Texas over the Rams
by 12 points. (Here's hoping we
our guess on that one.)
d that's that!

SCOOPS FR0SH SCRIBE
INTERVIEWS TWC COACH
By Wallace Polk
TNTERVIEW a coach? What a cinch! Didn't we interview the
visiting high school coaches last year? All we have to do is
ask a few questions, jot down a few dates, and there you have it.
Our first impression of Coach
While his n^ntes are out in Can-
yon battling the powerful West
Texas State College Buffaloes, you
can bet that the lighting spirit of
Newt Hayes (above) will be with
the entire Ram crew.
Hayes, star guard who was in-
jured in scrimmage twelve days
ago, is abl£" to be up today, but it
^vill \jc several days yet before he
wttl be back in condition for pv#c-
e.
^sure wish I could be out on
that fletds Friday night," Hayes
said this morning.
That's the Hayes" spirit!
Gtis Mjjle^ is that of a short, rug-
ged-looking individual whose chief
occupation seems to be that of a
seeker of facts.
"We were sent down to inter-
view you," we announce.
Mr.. Miller glances at our fresh-
man cap. "Be Brief Rutledge,
how is your ankle?"'
Rutledge announces the posses-
sion of two perfectly good ankles.
"Born?" we question In our
briefest manner.
"Yes....Hosea, what happened to
your jersey?"
Maybe we're wrong. We drop
brief for rhetoric.
•'We hear that you've coached
some wonderful teams, Mr. Miller."
Mr. Miller looks at us over the
lop of a pair of glasses and search-
es his pockets.
We drop rhetoric and pick up
where we left off brief.
"You like coaching?" we almost
»
assert.
"I'm a coach....Where is my note-
book ?"
We drop brief and rhetoric and
our pencil. While we try.^to strike
a conversational medium, we listen
to small tornadoes of "who-done
its", "where is-its", and "how-rome-
you-didn'ts" from Mr. Miller.
We remember something about,
talking of things back home up in
Colorado just to get acquainted.
"We climbed Pike's Peak," we
put in, '-a trifle loudly.
Mr. Miller turns slowly in his
seat, mutters something about Bar-
num's being a smart man and looks
suggestively at a small piece of
pipe' and the door.
We happen to remember a fresh-
man girlwaiting for an ice cream
cone at the drug store.
Hah! We can interview a coach
any time
