miles west of Alpine in West Tex-

ble on, the horizon to the south-
v.est, at the foothills of the Cliinati
Mountains.
. But that's the thing about the
Ghost. Light. It shines now and
then, unpredictably, and it never
! shines when anyone tries to trace

For a .hundred years, everyone
from Bov Scouts to ranchers and
: scientists have tried to stalk the
source of the light. They have
tried . to sneak up on it ; by- jeep.
. oil- horseback, on, foot and by heli-
copter. In almost every instance;
|the Tight shines brightly, as its,
i stalkers advances upon it. but
each time the light- flickers out.
Legend has it that the light is a

light in those parts was a pioneer's
kerosene lantern—hardly suffici-
ent to refract with : the brilliant
candlepovvor of the Ghost Light,
which sometimes glares like 'the
headlights of an oncoming train
What else might it be ' The Work
of a prankster? A prankster more
than, 100 years old?, Hardly. Well,
then, -several generations of prank-
sters? Not likely. Forty miles is a
long way to hike for a gag. Be-
sides. none Of the many : ex.pedi- -
tiqns- which have, sought the Ghost :
Light's source has turned up a.
sign of life.
it is almost ironic that not far
away astronomers, at McDonald
(ibservatiirx- -are probing the sec-,
rets of stars a billion, light-years;
distant .Yet .they are as- perplexed
as anyone by. the riddle, of. the
Ghost Light of U. S. 90, ' The
mountains have kept their secret
well. In 100. years and more. 'the>"
have yet to give up the ghost.
