Ephcsus was not only the capital
ot the Roman province of Asia
but also a famous religious center
for in it was the temple of
Diana one of the seven wonders
of the ancient world
In this great heathen city whose
people practiced the arts of magic
Paul labored for about three
years Here he again encountered
opposition
Demetrius the silversmith who
evidently employed many skilled
laborers to make silver models
of the temple of Diana finding
that his trade was threatened by
the spread of Christianity instigated
a riot which threw the city
Into angry confusion While Paul
suffered no serious danger from
this uprising it seems probable
that he was actually condemned
by the civil authorities of Ephc
sus to a combat with wild animals
in the arena for he speaks
in the 15th chapter of his first
letter to the Corinthians which
was written at Ephesus of such
a struggle
To be sure this reference maybe
interpreted metaphorically as
Indicative or some Jewish plot or
mob attack We cannot be sure
lor the New Testament record is
ambiguous But there can be no
doubt that Paul passed through
dangers and trials which brought
him to the brink of death
Thus we see that Pauls life
was full of thrills and hairbreadth
escapes It was not unlike that
of General Charles Gordon Chin
ese Gordon as he was jcalled in
whose memory there is a tablet
in St Pauls Cathedral London
bearing these words Who at all
times and everywhere gave his
s ren th iu the weak his sub
stance to the poor his sympathy
to the suffering his heart to God
Or to cite a living example
Pauls heroism is reminiscent of
that of Sir Wilfred Grcnfell the
Labrador doctor mariner and
saint who once wrote If Christ
is right and life is a field of honor
and Sir Galahuti and Nathan
Hale and Edith Cavell got the
real fun out of it then to every
redblooded man life becomes
heaven in proportion as he seizes
its opportunities for service

Sleeping Sickness
Losses Are Costly
Losses from sleeping sickness
among horses and mules cost
farmcis more than 8 million dollars
during 1037 and 1038 and
an incalculable amount more in
vahie of time lost from work by
animals1 that were sick but recovered
Payments to veterinarians
also ran into large sums
Farmers need not lose any animals
from the disease hereafter
A vaccine has been perfected and
thoroughly tested which affords
safety at slight cost On this point
the Horse and Mule Association
of America says
Vaccinating your horses and
mules with chick embryo vaccine
will give you virtually complete
protection against sleeping sickness
for at least 0 months If the
disease occurred in or near your
community last year have your
horses vaccinated as soon as the
first mosquitoes or biting flics
appear Two injections are necessary
from 7 to 10 days apart
The Buieau of Animal Industry
U S Dcpt of Agriculture
says in a recent release
There is no need for vaccinating
horses that arc in aicns where
the disease lias not appeared until
and unless it does appear there
for experience last year showed
that if animals were vaccinated
twice at seven day intervals as
soon as the disease appeared within
15 or 20 miles thoy were protected
and losses were virtually
nil
The vaccine for the two injections
costs your veterinarian
a little less than 120 per animal
His charge to you will depend on
how many you have to vaccinate
the distance he has to drive and
your help In confining animals
so work can be done without loss
of time He will be reasonable
If you cooperate
If the disease has been near
you have your animals vaccinated
with reliable chick embryo vac
cine as soon as mosquitoes and
biting flies appear and you will
escape losses
A 32page booklet containing
Schoenings full address and questions
and answers on every phase
of the disease may be obtained

TEMPTING FATE
As I sit alone in a leafy shade
And watch the cars flash by
They seem In such a hurry
And I can but wonder why
What is their destination
What urge this speeds demand
That they would take their own
lives
And others in their hand
The lives of father and mother
Of neighbor and little child
Are trusted to the drivers
Of those monsters flying wild
One twitching nerve or faultcring
eye
A faulty tire or steering wheel
And all would lie a pitiful wreck
Of bleeding flesh and twisted
steel

Why dare so much quite foolishly
And trust so much to fate
For Speed that tempting devil
Shall claim you soon or late
Trust not a life to destiny
Nor flaunt your hand nt death
For greedy hands arc reaching

To choke away your breath
