A Salute To Swisher County
Excerpts from an editorial appearing in the Amarlllo Times one
day last week
It is a pleasure for Amarlllo to join with Tulia and Swisher
County in the Golden Jubilee of that fine South Plains community
Appropriate observation is planned in Tulia on this 50th birthday
and Amarlllo will contribute a small part to the celebration At
the same time Amarlllo and all the rest of the Panhandle can see a
line example of civic pride community building and the still existent
aggressive spirit of the pioneers
Fifty years isnt a long time in the history of any country There
will be at Tulia many who were present when Swisher County was
organized July 17 1890 Without detracting the least bit from the
splendid courage foresight determination and desire to build which
inspired Plains pioneers to great achievements wo venture that there
will be real pioneers or a new school nt Tulia for this celebration
There will be pioneers of different kinds Among them will be
builders of new businesses and industries There will be the pioneers
who lately organized the Swisher County Rural Electric cooperative
which certainly is opening a new field of life to Swisher County
people There will be the pioneers in new farm products in irrigation
in sheep raising and in soil conservation
Amarillo and the Panhandle therefore will be doubly honored
on this occasion in meeting the pioneers now and to a large extent
Jiving by their replete memories of vigorous days when the Plains
area was new and these clearthinking and equally hardworking
and aggressive community leaders of today who have taken the ball
irom their predecessors and are carrying it on
Drouth depression and unfavorable prices havent stopped them
Swisher County certainly is a better place to live in than it was a
decade ago
Contribution To Freedom
Choose any alert boy or girl who stood for anything in the class
of 1940 Find out by a few friendly questions what he or she wants
Romance That will be the answer Romance of choosing a career
Romance of courtship and marriage romance of climbing the ladder of
life with more income from year to year more power more freedom
to enjoy all the things that loom large in the heart of youth
Your alert young friend may find his first job right at hand in
business or farming Or he may elect more years of training for medicine
engineering law or the other professions But the boy or girl
you question knows that in our country in normal times complete
freedom of choice will be given In America the choice of a career is
jgntirely free
And the boy or girl knows that this freedom is the result of the
American system of free enterprise says Nations Business Every
career from the presidency of our nation to similar leadership in any
profession corporation or other institution is open to the talents
of him or her who can climb This freedom was won for us by hosts
of Americans who chose their own careers installed as much machinery
and other aids as they needed did what selling was necessary
to keep their farms and factories busy and used whatever aids in
jelling were legitimate and in the public interest
One of these aids is advertising Advertising spreads the news
and speeds up the sales of only those products and services which
deserve to be speeded Any Intelligent young American no matter
what distorted or ignorant teaching he has received in school is far
smarter than those teachers and text book writers who claim that
the intensive advertising of good commodities and services has been
a detriment
A Useful Religion
Everyone has troubles and worries and problems It is natural
that such things come to us There is no escape from a certain amount
in the manner in which
of them There is however a vast difference
people meet their troubles and their problems With some the least
little problem sets them to worrying and magnifying its possibilities
they become Finally they reach a
The more they fret the unhappier
point where they become chronic worriers Contrasted with these are
those persons who refuse to let their worries get them down With
determination they live above them They manage to find happiness
in the midst of a world of worries This latter group has discovered
the secret of Christs religion They have made it a living philosophy
of life a real workable usable thing That religion should be a real
usable workable practical thing in the lives of men and women is it
seems to me revealed over and over again in Christs teachings It is
not alone a beautiful philosophy of life but a thing to bo used In life
