Boy Scouts In Defense
Perhaps never before in the history of Boy Scouting
have Its followers been so alert to the motto of
Be Prepared than they arc at the present time February
6 12 which is Boy Scout Week in America
will be observed chiefly by formulating and carrying
out plans to aid in Nntional Defense This thirtysecond
anniversary is one that the whole Nation could well
celebrate with thanks in its heart that such an organization
exists
Starting as an organization formed by Lord Ba
denPowell in 1907 to help boys meet the problems of
leisure the Scouting movement today covers a much
larger scope than could be imagined then On February
8 1910 W D Boyce Edward S Stewart and Stanley
Willis had the Boy Scouts of America incorporated under
the laws of the District of Columbia The bill asking
for this incorporation stated clearly that the purpose
of the movement was to produce a civic enthusiasm
for service in a nation that means to live nt
peace with nil the world But because their nation is
at war the Boy Scouts arc by their good turns daily
achieving things that will aid in America establishing
a lasting peace
The local Scout troop 03 as well as other such
boys throughout the country have led the way in the
waste paper pickups and aluminum campaigns They
have assisted in delivering stamp and bond posters
and in the Red Cross financial drives Their time will
be devoted from now on thioughout the duration to
developing Emergency Medical units messenger service
Air Scouting and fire watching all of which are in
cooperation with the office Civilian Defense
Like many oilier wonderful organizations the Boy
Scouts need the moral and financial support of Mr and
Mrs Average Citizen Now when the boys are doing
all they can for their country contributors of time
service and money will be more than repaid for their
assistance in keeping the Scouting movement alive and
growing
Minute Editorials
One of the thrilling things about the attack upon
the Philippines is the fact that Filipino soldiers are
fighting side by side with Americans to defend the island
This is of course as it should be but in this
world where so many things that should be often arc
not it is a source of infinite satisfaction that the Filipino
soldiers and even the savage and semicivilized
Moros who but a generation ago were human headhunters
should now be lined up on the side of the
democracies of the world fighting side by side with
Americans to oppose the invaders
Mussolini is a has been He will never take the
place among his people or the world that he once had
The lact that he is a blatant braggart tilled with
pompous conceit and also that he was willing to sneak
in after he thought the fight was over and try to stab
in the back his fallen foe clearly characterizes him for
what he is There is nothing Mussolini can say or that
history can record that will change that Mussolini up
to the time of his invasion of Ethiopia was well thought
of His country wps prosperous and contented and esteemed
He fastened to the voice of the Satan Hitler
and lost it all

Weekly Sermon
BY THOMAS IIASTWELL
Unfortunately there aie those in this country who
have been permitted to live here who have enjoyed
its privileges and its opportunities and its liberties yet
who are luke warm in their support and allegiance in
its present crisis Some of these deliberately wilfully
criminally and traitorously withhold their support and
allegiance Others waver in their support through weakness
and indecision It is unfortunate tragic that they
show this ingratitude for the opportunity and the privilege
that this country has granted them in permitting
them to live here Now that the crisis has come
they should come out for this country and boldly and
courageously and patriotoically take their stand for
the country that lias given them so much and so generously
It reminds us of the time when Joshua of old
called the twelve tribes of Israel together at one of the
critical times in their history After calling their attention
to the fact that God had delivered them out of
bondage in Israel had cared for them and watched
over them and brought them to the promised land of
opportunity and freedom and plenty he called upon
them to choose between the gods of slavery and bondage
and the Lord closing his appeal with the words
As for me and my house we will serve Uie Lord
The time has come it seems to me when everyone
Jiving in America should rejoice to say As for me
and my house we will serve America

Steel plays an important role
in our peacetime welfare It becomes
absolutely vital when wo
are at war It should be of interest
therefmc to take a look
at the annual steel pioducing capacity
of the nations engaged in
this present war as listed in the
following table
United States KB million tons
British Empire20 35 million
tons
Russia 21 45 million tons
Germany Japan and all Continental
Europe except Russia
GO 35 million tons
From the set figures we learn
that the United States alone can
produce three tons of steel for
every two tons that can be made
by Germany Italy Japan and all
the Axisdominated countries of
the world put together that the
combined steel capacity of the
United States the British Empire
and Russia is considerably more
than twice the Axis total and
that even if twothirds of the
Russian capacity should fall into
German hands which now seems
unlikely the Allies still could
make 60 percent more steel than
Germany and the rest of the
world
These statistics and the facts
arrived at therefrom should be
most comforting to the American
people They conclusively prove
that in steel production we and
our Allies have a very wide margin
over the Axis powers Because
of our superiority in steel
production alone any rational human
being must concede eventual
military defeat for Hitler
and his mob Moreover as the
same dominance is true of most
of the other things essential to
waging war Axis defeat is even
more certain

War Rationing
Done For Our
Own Protection
BY FRANK DIXON
For the first time in the memory
of most people living today
practically every person finds himself
affected in one way or another
with the new rationing programNaturally it is difficult to become
at once accustomed to a
sudden curtailment of many items
that have been in common use
for years and a shortage of which
has never been dreamed could
come to pass
In a few instances in every
community unfortunately there is
some resentment against the restrictions
and there are even a
few instances in which an effort
is made to get around the restriction
if possible It seems difficult
for those persons to believe
or to comprehend that the restriction
really applies to them
They feel that it is all right that
it should apply to others but
there should be some way around
it for them They think or seem
to think that their case is just
a little different and that if the
rationing board could only understand
it would make an exceptionThis is going to be one of the
problems that many are going to
have to work out as this war goes
on They are going to have to
realize that we are at war that
the rationing program is not being
arbitrarily applied as a theory
or an experiment but cither because
the rationed items are scarce
and there isnt enough to supply
everyone the usual amount or because
the rationed items are vitally
needed in defense
If there isnt enough of the
rationed items to supply everyone
in the usual amount the individual
should realize that it is
lor his protection thnt the rationing
program is invoked otherwise
it is more than likely that
he would get none of the items
They would all be grabbed by
those who are in a position to
have first chance to get them and
hold them for their own use or
ulease them at a higher price
It the item is one used in the
deltnse program that required
by the army is set aside and the
needs of the public supplied from
what remains
We must come to a point in
this country where we lealize
that these things are done for
our own protection Because they
are done for our own protection
we srould accept them graciously
and willingly and without complaint
or criticism
When it comes to the matter
of having to walk to and from
our work because we have no
tires for our car it should not be
done in a spirit of martyrdom or
complaint It should be done
cheerfully willingly graciously
and gladly We should be glad
that we are able in this way to
contribute our bit to national defense
and to the boys at the front
who are fighting our battles
And incidentally let no one underrate
it It is going to be
great struggle It is going to call
for sacrifice and selfdenial and
giving up on the part of everyone
Let no one think that he
can escape its burden This fight
for freedom belongs to everyone
not alone to the boys in uniform
and everyone is going to have to
sacrifice and serve as they are
doing

Monday Feb 2 was Ground Hog Day and according
to the old superstition if the ground hog sees
his shadow on this day he will go back into his hole
because there will be six more weeks of bad weather
If this old superstition rings true then we in Tulla are
in for bad weather for as you know Monday was typical
of a beautiful sunshiny Spring day in the PanhandlePete Raymond says he does not believe the old
superstition will pertain to this section of the country
since there were no Ground Hogs West of the Mississippi
river just like there were no jack rabbits east
of the Mississippi river until man moved them
Someone asked me what a ground hog was and I
could not answer them but according to Mr Webster
a ground hog is the same as a wood chuck So if yort
know what a wood chuck is you are all right on this
question

Dear Friends
On the back page of the Jan 29 issue of the Tulia

an item which shocked me
considerably
Is it possible that with all the effort our citizen
are beginning to make lor National Defense they have >
overlooked such an important in the

Truly all your plans for Civilian Defense will be
for naught if you lose sight of the significance ol the

It certainly would be a sad commentary on the
