Have A Healthy Holiday
Health tips to keep you feeling your best from
holly jolly head to merry toe.
By: Christie Bolim Chase, Staff Writer
In addition to bringing love, peace, and joy to
our lives, the holiday season also means
stress, sickness and weight gain for many. As
everyday routines are cast aside in the flurry of
shopping, decorating, wrapping, baking and
partying, many people feel like they are being
pulled in many directions leaving little time for
rest, exercise or healthy eating habits.
Research shows that any event, even a joyous
occasion like the holidays can cause stress
levels to skyrocket and put the body at risk of
getting sick. Regardless of how prepared you
are for the holiday season, more than likely you
will experience some stress and disruption this
season. However, with a few simple secrets
you can enjoy the holidays without feeling
completely rundown.
Cold & Flu Facts
On average, adults contract two to four colds
a year, while children get a whopping six to
eight. Although coids and flu occur year round,
late winter and early spring seem to be the
most common times for suffering. Both the flu
and the common cold are viral infections and
therefore can not be treated with antibiotics.
Currently, the best way to ward off the flu is to
get a vaccination and the best way to ward off
colds is to keep up good hygiene habits.
A cold usually includes some combination of
sneezing; coughing; headache; sore throat;
runny, stuffy or congested nose; hoarseness;
swollen glands; and fever. With the flu you may
have severe headaches, muscle ache, high
fever and lower back pain. Cold and flu
symptoms do overlap and telling them apart is
often tough, but it's important to do so because
treatments vary, and some viruses can become
dangerous. If you are in doubt about your
condition, see your health care provider.
You can pick up viruses in many ways, such
as shaking hands or sharing a phone with
someone who's sick. Usually, symptoms begin
one to two days after infection and peak after
two to four days. Although there is no cure for
the cold or flu, most run their entire course
through the body in one or two weeks.
The common cold is caused by any one of
200 viruses, and symptoms are usually milder
than those of the flu. influenza or flu, often
affects many people at once and symptoms
come on more quickly than those of a cold. The
fever that accompanies any cold or flu is the
body's defense to fight the infection and kill the
virus.
Although there is no medication on the
market that will cure the common cold or flu,
you can buy over-the-counter medications that
can relieve various cold and flu symptoms.
Discuss your symptoms with your doctor or
pharmacist, so they can help you select
medications that will help alleviate your
symptoms. Remember, when taking
medications of any kind to carefully follow the
directions listed on the box or bottle. A vaccine
is developed each year against two or three
strains of the flu. This vaccine is available
around October or November, before the winter
season begins. Health care providers
recommend these healthful hints to insure a
speedy recovery from a cold or flu.
• Get plenty of rest and do not
overexert yourself.
•Avoid excessively dry air. Breath
steam from a hot shower or steam
vaporizer to help loosen chest
congestion.
•Drink six to eight glasses of fluids
daily. Water, herbal tea, or chicken
soup will help relieve congestion.
Eat, Drink and Be Merry
For most Americans healthy eating habits go
on a hiatus over the holiday season, causing
weight gain and fatigue. Although it definitely
will not hurt you to enjoy a few of your favorite
holiday foods, often goodies are eaten in
excess, and in lieu of vegetables and other
healthy foods. Try to keep a consistent diet and
to eat regular meals during this season, and
you will end up staying healthier and slimmer.
Avoid the temptation to skip meals before
holiday parties, because if you go hungry you
will eat more than you should. Before going to
a party, enjoy a small sandwich, or cup of fruit
to help beat hunger and keep you from stuffing
yourself at the party. Although it is easier said
that done, medical experts recommend getting
plenty of rest during this busy season. Studies
show that people who do not get enough sleep
are more apt to over eat; however, when you
are tired, it's sleep you need, not food.
Secrets To Having A
Stress-Free Holiday
No matter how much time and energy you
put into holiday preparations, not every single
thing is going to be perfect. Instead of worrying
about how you will get all of the holiday baking,
decorating, shopping and wrapping done, find
things that you can cut-corners on and save
yourself some unnecessary stress. For
instance, don't waste time making all of your
holiday baked goods from scratch. Instead
supplement your favorite recipes with a few
yummy packaged mixes that take minutes to
prepare. Years from now, no one will remember
the fruitcake you made from scratch, but you
will remember how much stress it caused.
Let the Internet be your friend during the
holiday season. Shopping on-line can save you
money and lots of time. Plus you can browse
while wearing your flannel pajamas and
enjoying a warm toasty fire at home. In addition
to the world wide web, catalogs are another
great place to look for gifts, but you have to
order fairly early. Even if you don't buy from
catalogs or the world wide web, use them to
brainstorm your gift list before heading for the
mall. It will save you time if you already know
which stores to visit, and what you want to buy.
One final shopping secret is to shop early. To
beat crowds, shop early in the month, early in
the week and as early in the day as possible.
To avoid an all-nighter on December 24th, wrap
your gifts soon after you buy them. Wrapping in
stages will make the project much easier and
less stressful. Opt for gift bags and decorative
bows, for those gifts that don't need boxes.
Over the years, holiday decorations grow,
making the chore of unpacking and putting up,
tedious and never ending, especially for those
who have amassed thousands of trinkets and
treasures over the years. This may be the
perfect year to scale down. Allot a certain
amount of time to decorating (say 3 or 4 hours)
Go through your boxes and put up the things
that are most important to you. It is not always
how much you put up, but the sentiment of the
few things you do. Many interior decorators feel
that there is great beauty in simplicity. By only
putting out select decorations, you give your
favorite decorations a chance to shine, instead
of hiding them amid a cluttered, over-decorated
house.
No matter how hectic your holiday season,
the fun you have and the memories you create
are up to you. Be kind to yourself and to others,
and you and your loved ones will have a
cherished, relaxing holiday season.
