Entertainment
Mystical Magical Toyland
Give fun this season in the form of a terrific toy or game.
By: Christie Bohrn Chase, Staff Writer
We all know that Santa's sack is full of
toys kids love, but if you have children on
you gift list, you may be stumped as to
which toys your gift recipients are
dreaming of. If asking the child what he or
she wants is not an option, and you are
procrastinating a trip to the store, where
you end up wandering aimlessly through
aisles of brightly boxed toys, peruse the
following toy and game gift ideas. Many
are both educational and interactive,
including classic and new board games,
sure to please even the hard to shop for
little ones on your list.
As we all know, toys are designed for
kids of specific ages; however if you don't
have any children or it has been a long
time since your children were small, it
may be challenging to purchase toys.
Here are a few popular suggestions.
For babies celebrating their first holiday
season, toys that engage their senses like
crib mobiles and rattles make great gifts.
Baby toys may make a squeaking or
crinkling noise, have a nubby texture, and
be soft and cuddly Infants tend to mouth
toys, and textured ones can help relieve
teething pain. Great toys for babies under
a year old include: soft dolls, colorful
stuffed animals, teething toys, floor gyms
and activity boards. Or if you feel like they
have all the baby toys they need, consider
purchasing a children's book to help them
begin to build their own library.
Between the ages of one and two
babies gain better control of their motor
skills and like toys that require pushing
buttons or pop-up parts. Educational toys
for this age will name a letter, a shape, or
a number when the baby presses a
button. Popular toys for this age group
include: stacking rings, large play
vehicles, nesting cups or boxes, balls,
puzzles with four or five pieces, rubber
ducks or other bath toys.
Toddlers have the fine motor skills
needed to complete a puzzle or build with
blocks and they like toys that make real-
life sounds, such as telephones that ring
or dolls that talk. Many toddlers are also
big enough to ride a tricycle. Great toy
gifts for children between the ages of two
and four include: toy telephones, tea-party
sets, toy kitchens, doll strollers, and
construction toys that snap together like
Legos.
Once children become preschool age
there is a tremendous explosion in
learning ability, and they like to play
dress-up and pretend. Interactive toys that
teach math and verbal skills make good
gifts, as do art supplies and craft kits,
action figures, Barbie-type dolls, dress-up
clothes, transportation toys - such as
parking garages, airports and train
stations, soccer balls and basketballs, and
bicycles with training wheels.
Elementary school children ages six
and up usually voice their toy wish lists in
a letter to Santa. Most have developed
hobbies and interests like sports, music or
art by this age. Top toys for elementary
school children include: Handheld
electronic games, computer games,
sports equipment, basic science kits,
remote-control cars, and board games.
Get In The Game
Board games are popular with children
and adults and make great gifts because
you get to share in the gaming fun.
Children under the age of six do best with
games that don't require reading such as
Candyland, Hungry Hungry Hippos and
Yahtzee Jr. Elementary kids will enjoy
board games that involve strategy, like
Chess, Checkers, Scrabble, Monopoly
and Trivial Pursuit Jr. Older kids and
adults of all ages enjoy all types of board
games, and there are literally thousands
to choose from. Some are classic, like
Scrabble, others deal with current pop
culture, like Top Ten, and some are great
for groups or teams, like Cranium. If you
are hunting for the perfect board game for
someone on your holiday list check out
one of the following or many other popular
board games on the market today.

The Return Of Game Night
Decades ago before the
television and computer became
our most popular forms of
entertainment, families and
friends played board games on a
regular basis. Game night is
growing in popularity again
among people of all ages. In
addition to getting to play great
games, game night offers a
chance for people to interact with
each other in a fun way, and is
an inexpensive way for a group
of friends or family to spend an
evening.
When planning a game night,
be sure to have a wide variety of
games to match people's
interests. Encourage everyone to
bring something for the group to
snack on or drink. Play
background music instead of the
TV while games are going on, so
that people can focus. It is best
to start with games that
someone knows the rules to.
Add new games after the group
becomes comfortable playing
together.
