JL Walk to Fight Diabetes
OVER 3000 EXPECTED TO SCARE
DIABETES AWAY THIS HALLOWEEN
North Texans Walk to Help Stop Diabetes in its Tracks
By Gina Perales Hethcock
More than 3,000 area ghosts,
pirates and princesses (and their
mommies and daddies) will haunt
the Texas Ranger Ballpark in
Arlington on Halloween morning,
hoping their ghastly march will
help put an end to diabetes, a
disease that affects 400,000 in the
Dallas/Fort Worth area.
"Diabetes kills more people
each year than breast cancer and
A IDs together. That's a scary
thought," said Melissa Caraway,
associate director of Step Out:
Walk to Fight Diabetes, a
fundraiser benefiting the American
Diabetes Association where the
masqueraders will converge.
The walk will be the
culmination of several months of
raising donations which will help
the association's mission: to
prevent and cure diabetes and to
improve the lives of all people
affected by diabetes. There is still
time to register. Call toll free 1-
888-DIABETES or visit
www.diabetes.org/stepout.
"Step Out: Walk to Fight
Diabetes is such a wonderful event
for friends, co-workers and
families to come together and help
raise money for a good cause,"
said Quin Neal, executive director
for the American Diabetes
Association in Dallas and Fort
Worth. "The camaraderie and
spirit that is enjoyed by
participating in this event is
priceless."
The 5k walk is scheduled to
begin at 10 a.m. There will be a
free health and fitness expo at the
Rangers Ballpark as well as live
entertainment. Kids will take part
in a Halloween costume contest.
Today, there are nearly 24
million Americans who have
diabetes. While an estimated 17.9
million have been diagnosed,
unfortunately, 5.7 million people
are unaware that they have the
disease. If present trends
continue, one in three Americans,
and 1 in 2 minorities, born in 2000
will develop diabetes in their
lifetime. To date, the American
Diabetes Association has raised
and donated more than $450
million for diabetes research.
National sponsors of the event
include Cary's Sugar Free Syrup
and Equal. Local sponsors include
Wal greens, JC Penney, Bravo
Health, McCarthy, Baylor
University Medical Center at
Dallas and Geico.
The American Diabetes
Association is leading the fight
against the deadly consequences
of diabetes and fighting for those
affected by diabetes. The
Association funds research to
prevent, cure and manage
diabetes; delivers services to
hundreds of communities;
provides objective and credible
information; and gives voice to
those denied their rights because
of diabetes.
Founded in 1940, our mission is
to prevent and cure diabetes and to
improve the lives of all people
affected by diabetes. For more
information please call the
American Diabetes Association at
1 -800-DIABETES (1-800-342-
2383) or visit www.diabetes.org.
Information from both these
sources is available in English and
Spanish.
