Kids In Action
The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the following infor-
mation on volunteer opportunities for young people.
CHRISTMAS CHEER and a great meal will be your rewards when you volunteer at the
annual Christmas Eve Feast taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center the
morning and afternoon of December 24. Volunteers will be needed for shifts of as little as
one hour to help with setup, serving of dinner, waiting on tables, and cleanup. Volunteers
are cordially invited to enjoy the sumptuous feast themselves. Youth volunteers are wel-
come.
SANTA NEEDS HELPERS for a big toy and clothing drive benefiting children victimized by
abuse or neglect. The drive is based at a warehouse in the Houston Heights and will con-
, tinue through December 20. Volunteers are needed to sort through amassed merchandise
and match it to children's wish lists. Commitment to one or more morning or afternoon
> shifts is all that's asked. Weekday and Saturday shifts are available. The minimum age for
k volunteers is 15,12 if accompanied by an adult.
0 MELLOW MELODIES can brighten the spirits of residents of a nursing home near the
Astrodome when you use your musical skills to entertain them. If you are proficient in
• playing the piano, guitar, or any other instrument that readily lends itself to solo perform-
^ ances, consider dropping by on occasional basis to cheer and charm residents with your
musical skills. Sessions can be arranged for almost any evening or during the daytime on
• weekends.
# ANIMAL LOVERS have a variety of volunteer opportunities from which to choose when they
get involved with an animal rescue agency in Tomball. They can help out at the agency's
• animal shelter by assisting with pet adoptions, office support, yard work, or grooming and
# walking the animals. They can also assist at mobile pet adoption stations set up at varying
^ locations on weekends. The minimum age for individual volunteers is 16, but persons down
* to age 12 are eligible if accompanied by an adult.
G CHRISTMAS MEMORIES will be with you a long time when you share the joy of that day
0 with institutional shut-ins. If you have some time available either Christmas morning or
early afternoon, plan on coming to any of four meeting locations (in Katy, Cypress, or the
Greenway Plaza area) and teaming up with other volunteers to visit one of a number of
scheduled nursing homes or hospitals. As long as you have adequate transportation,
there's no minimum age for participation. Make December 25 more than just another date
on the calendar by getting involved.
FOR SELF-STARTERS: Help elderly neighbors with chores they have difficulty doing them-
selves. Some examples of easy-to-do but very helpful activities are: mowing the lawn, put-
ting out garbage, pulling up weeds, painting a fence, etc.
DID YOU KNOW that the dollar value of the time contributed last year by volunteers in the
greater Houston metropolitan area is estimated at over 4 billion dollars? *
