W. Lee O'Daniel's Fire Truck For Sale;
Nickel Cup Of Coffee Still To Be Had
By LANOY CUNN
In last week's NEWS there was an item about the Mat-
agorda County Commissioner's Court authorizing the pur-
chase of a circulating fan for the county jail. Wonder if
that's why the clink is,filled a "cooler"? . . . How's that?
Here's a classified ad which appeared in a reccnt edition of
the Edna Herald: "FOR SALE—1956 fire truck, only slightly
used. Write W. LEE O'DANIEL, Dallas." . . . During these
days of increasing prices, it's unusual indeed to find a cafe
or restaurant still selling a cup of coffee for only a nickel. So
unusual in fact, we think it's a newsworthy item. Bullard's
Cafe and Grocery in Sargent is one place which maintains
that 5-cent-a-cup policy. . .
Bay City Auto & Sales Company has opened an-
other used car lot in town. It's located at 1934 Seventh
Streeet, formerly the location of Continental Trailways.
. . . CHARLES ROBERTS all smiles over acquiring the
Red Goose line of shoes for the kiddos in this area. So
happy, as a matter of fact, he's giving free Red Goose
rings and puzzles to any youngster that comes into his
store. . . .

ed last week. Sorry, but the man
giving them away informed us to
wait one more week before spill-
ing the beans. Next week's NEWS
tells all. . . Must be the heat! A
hot, tired looking man pulled his
car into the curb on Sixth Street,
parked, got out and noticed the
time running out on his parking
meter and then placed a nickel in
the meter next to him by mistake,
giving some lucky parker an ex-
tra hour. To make it ironic, the
poor fellow got a ticket for an ex-
pired meter. . .
Hearts and flowers! Bay City's
Red Caps sotftball team won
their opening game at the state
tournament in Brownwood last
week by trouncing Texas City
but then lost the next two games,
which automatically eliminated
them. Wait til next year, Red
Caps!. . . State Representative-
Elect JOHN HUEBNER and
members of his family escaping
the heat by cooling off at Mata-
gorda Peninsula for a few days.
We think JOHN came out with
the cleverest campaign gimmick
seen in many a day with his
"wanted" poster. . .
Now that the state primary
election is a thing of the past,
many people think the one thing
that slowed PAPPY O'DANIEL
poll-pulling power was promising
too many things that seemed
ridiculous, if not impossible. One
in particular, piping water all the
was from the Mississippi River to
Upper West Texas and making a
lake *3ven larger than any of the
Great Lakes. Come to think o'f it,
that is pretty big talk, even for a
MR. AND MRS. STEVE COL-
LIDA and children visiting rela-
tives in Port Arthur and Tyler
this week-end. They'll attend a
family reunion while in Tyler...
PAT STAYTON and family
visiting his parents during his
vacation. PAT is being trans-✓
ferred. from San Francisco to
Philadelphia and happy to make
the change. . .
LAWRENCE WALKER sport-
ing a new Ford while on a visit
with his parents. . . COACH DON
HALEY back from the Texas High
School Coaches meeting at Lub-
bock. Reports he: "Very hot and
dry in West Texas". . . Beth Da-
vid Center's annual barbecue in
LeTulle Park Sundjay drawing
raves and praise from' over 1,200
people that paS86d; through the
chow line. The cake sale also was
a huge success as all cakes were
sold. . .
Short Summer! In only 19
days the bells start ringing as
school doors open, arid just 10
days later will find many a Bay
City fan watching a football
game in Brenham wishing he
had a fan with which to keep
cool. . . According to a story in
Sunday's Houston Post, DON
CANNON's 'band played a re-
turn engagement at Sylvan
Beach ballroo'm due to the re-
quest of 1,700 dance patrons!
It's evident the Calypso Club-
bers have the best band for the
forthcoming soiree in September
they've yet had, as DON's band
has been hired for the dance. . .

demands for fashion for these jun-
