LIONS PLAY IN STATE AT TEXARKANA THURSDAY
FISHING NEWS
Everybody Hears Of Good Catches
Bui No! Bragging About Own Luck
By BOB STEWART
Editor
Almost everybody had heard of
someone catching something last
week-end, but nobody did any
catching themselves.
Best report came from Henry
Sheerer. He said A. B. Ingram of
Houston fished around Green's
Bayou and Half-Moon Reef and

Henry's boat is sidelined with a
cracked transom and he isn't get-
ting in too much angling. ri he
craft got banged up at Dead Man's
Curve while being put in the wa
ter. Boat builder supreme Sid Or-
sak has just about got it ready
for the water again.
Goldie Insall got 19 keepers
(trout) at the first bypass Friday
and tied into a four-foot shark.
After a 15-minute fight she land-
ed the toothy one.
When the shark finally was
landed, Goldie said it got as mad
as a—well—wet shark and broke
the lead.

BAY CITY
CITY RECREATION EXHIBIT
PLANNED FOR AUGUST 16
A "county fair" exhibit of the.
work of children participating in'
the Bay City Recreation Program
will be held Thursday night, Au-
gust 10, in the Mary Tierce With-
ers Elementary School auditorium.
The building will be open to the
public at 7:30 o'clock with a short
program of square dancing and j
folk Karnes beginning at 8 o'clock. I
Mrs. J. Sewell Lawson, director,
said work of the children will be
set up in booths like at a county
fair.
Visitors may go from booth to
booth and see arts and crafts ex-
hibits, gift wrapping demonstra-
tions, cake decorating, and many
other projects of the recreation
program.
one, but Goldie says a man and
hrs two sons fished around Little
Boggy and Dead Man's Curve
Sunday and took 33 trout, some
reds, and flounders.
The writer called Fisherman Ar-
thur Holloway Monday morning
Arthur's voice answered and we
started trying to get fish news—
with no success. After about three
minutes the voice finally revealed
that it was mechanically tran-
scribed and that we should leave
our message with it.
Not going in for these new-
fangled things, we decided to wait
and cS.ll back next week!
The recreation program con-
cludes the following Friday, Au-
gust 17.
Mrs. Lawson said about 185 stu-
dents were counted last Friday at
Pierce and that more than that
have attended on other days.
Square dancing is taught on
Tuesday and Thursday nights
from 7:30 to 9 o'clock in the Ser-
vice Center. There are now four
squares consisting of 24 teen-
agers.
All classes are still open. '"If a
family has been away on vacation
during the early part of the recrea
tion program, their child may still
enroll in any subject," Mrs. Law-
son said.
Officials were highly impressed
by the number of pre-school age
students partic'pating in the pro-
gram this year. About 50 children
are really going to be oriented
when they enroll in regular school
next year, Mrs. Lawson said.

YOU GET THE BEST DEAL AT YOUR AUTHORIZED FORD DEALER'S
and Fish Commission stationed at
Palacios. He was introduced by
Harold Martin, Matagorda Coun-
ty game warden.
Mr. Guest told the fishermen of
his work in the Palacios area.
Making Ecological Survey
He is presently engaged in an
ecological survey of the marine
life in Matagorda and Tres-Paia-
cios bays. That is, he studies the
marine life, the habitation, and
the animals' relation to their ha-
bitation.
One of the important points Mr.
Guest brought out was that the
salinity of the bay waters all
along the Texas coast is rapidly
growing higher.
Sea water is 36/1,000 in salinity
while the water in Matagorda Bay
measures 30/1,000.
The cause o'f this rise in salinity
is attributed largely to the pro-
longed drought in the Southwes-
tern area.
Oysters. Shrimp Cut Down
As the saltier water invades the
bays, oysters find it difficult to
build reefs and the shrimp popula-
tion is cut down.
Shrimping in this area is drop-
ping off at a rapid clip, the ma-
rine biologist noted. Shrimp that
like low salinity are dying out
while new types are coming forth
to adapt themselves to the chang-
ing conditions.
Mr. Guest stressed that poor
shrimping and fishing can not be
blamed on high salinity entirely.
"Laguna Madre has some of the
best fishing along the coast," he
said, "and the salinity is terrifical-
ly high."
Shrimp Are Dyed
Don't be alarmer if you net a
purple, green, or violet shrimp in
the near future, the fish expert
cautioned.
The game and fish commission
is planning a long-range program
of dyeing shrimp in order to study
their habits. Shrimp are now being
tagged with small metal or plas-
tic disks.
Trout, drum, and redfish are
being tagged also. The metal tags
are of a dull color so larger 'fish
won't be attracted and devour the
tag-bearer.
Mr. Guest said the tags are
talher hard to see and that one
redfish returned to him was clean-
ed. and practically on the table.

BUT WHO WANTS
TO CONCENTRATE?
Ed Duenow writes sagely in
his golfing column in the Edna
Herald:
"Being no different than the
average male on a golf course,
we like girls. We are also pleased
at how pleasantly the girl play-
ers in this part of the county
step aside to let faster players
play through. They are tops.
"The other day, however, a
beautiful tiling in shorts step-
ped aside to let four men players
play through and she almost
ruined the medal score all the
way around.
"After one good took and
many sly glances at this lovely
thing, two o( the players pulled
to the rough on the left, one
went to a bunker, and the fourth
almost blew his stack with a
round house slice to the rough
on the right.
"We always did contend that
the best golf player is the one
who concentrates most of his
shot."

Tiiuse hard-hitting Bay City Junior Tccn-Age League
Lions will enter state play at Texarkana Thursday after-
noon at 1 o'clock.
The champions of District 2 will face the winners of
District i in the first crucial game. Still battling it out for
the right to play Bay City are Pasadena, Baytown, Port
Arthur, Beaumont, Bellaire, Galena Park, and Orange.
In addition to Bay City and the District 4 winner, there
will be six teams in the three-day —— ,

Batting Averages
Although the spotlight is on the
Lions in state play, the rest of'
the Bay City Junior-Teen-Age'
teams had some impressive season
batting averages—particularly the
second-place Rotary Club boys.
Rotary averages:
Rudy Mendiola, .417; Ed McMil-
lan, .214; Douglas Rosenthal, .378;
Charles Harrison, .157; Dale Cal-
lihan, .237.
Joe Martinez, .178; Jerry Voyles,
.190; Billy Vaughn, .182; Billy
Freeman, .108; J. McMillan, .667;
Cardoba, .222.
Pulson averages:
Gene Briggs, .235; Mario San-
chez, .229; Howard Ham Jr., :15G;
Richard Starnes, .457; Nolan
Heard, .091; C. C. Willis Jr., .308.
Bobby Cox, .279; Claude Reinke.
.326; Norris, .48; Franks, .300.
tournament concluding Saturday.
The Lions, managed by Barney
Mason, won this league's first dis-
trict crown last week at Freeport
with a 12-9 win over Texas City, a
bye, and a 5-4 victory over Lake
Jackson.
Rudy Mendiola, a Giant hurler
during the regular season, tossed
against Texas City Friday and
squeaked by after giving up 10
hits. Bay City got eight singles.
Larry Sanders, the league's most
winning pitcher during season
play, allowed only four hits in
nipping Lake Jackson, 5-4.
Shut-Out Working
Sanders had a 4-0 shut-out work,
ing in the top of the seventh when
Lake Jackson suddenly found the
range and pushed over four runs.
The Bay City lads pulled the
game out of the fire by scoring the
winning run in the last half of
the seventh.
Manager Mason refused to
single out any particular player
for more credit than the others.
"They all came through like pro-
fessionals in the clutch," he said.
By way of example, he pointed out
that the locals were behind Texas
City twice but never quit trying
until the game turned in their
favor.
Extra base stars in the two-
game tournament were Sanders
with a triple against Texas City
and Pete Sterling with another
triple against Lake Jackson. Sterl-
ing was ruled out, however, for
failing to touch second base.
Robert Smith and Mike Miller
collected doubles.
Howard Ham was a clutch-hit-
ting gem in the Lake Jackson
game.
The Lions will leave for Texar-
kana (Wednesday to get a nicrht's
rest before the big meet starts.
Booming Bats
Bay City's big chance in the
state tournament will rest on the
team's booming bats. The man-
ager of the Texas City team threw
two of his area's best southpaws at
the locals Friday and they did not
come close to holding down the
Lions.
The Lions' pitching and fielding
also are good enough for the team
to go all the way.
Season batting averages:
Miller, centerfield, .188; Men-
diola, pitcher, .417; Marvin Kris-
tynik, third base, .422; Sanders,
shortstop and pitcher, .488.
Jackie Lee, first base, .356; Pete
Sterling, second base, .357; Ham,
ffetcher, .156; Smith tightfield,
.178; Donald Wells, le'ftfield. .207.
Pedro Perez, utility, .122; V.
Waleck, utility, .000; Jerry Lowe,
utility, .084; C. G. Miller, utility,
.000; Gail Leftwich, utility, .160.
