AUSTIN. - Thoughtless hunt-
ers shooting at birds and ani
mals on telephone jwles, or
sighting In their gUns by aiming
at the lines, Inconvenience and
endanger many people who de
pend on their phones
Francis G Winters, president
of Texas Telephone and Tele-
graph, an independent company
serving 21 counties In East Cen
trtl Texas, describes the re-
sults of such senseless shooting
in the October Issue of "Texas
Parks & Wildlife" magazine.
In one case, two rural com-
munities were Isolated for 75
hows In 1984 when telephone
lines were shot out over Labor
Day. It took only $1.00 worth
of buckshot to ruin the holiday
for fti families.
D a m a ged communication
lines often do more than dis-
rupt week-end plans, however.
Tn another instance, a heart at-
tack victim almost lost his life
because a shot-up cable delay
ed his reaching a doctor, said
Winters.
tn addition to carrying emerg-
ency messages, telephone lines
may be guiding planes, serving
radar tracking stations, or con-
necting several missile sites
Each minute a telephone Is out
of order the safety of many
people may be threatened, ac
cording to the magazine.
Texas Telephone and Tele-
graph has spent 180,000 on re
pairs and replacements for Its
S.7S3 miles of lines in the past
four yeara. The 1S4 other Inde
pendent telephone companies In
Texas, together with South-
western Bell, make up 525,427
miles of lines. TV total cost is
undoubtedly very high.
Winters said these costs will
ultimately result in higher
monthly bills for telephone us
en.
Damaging telephone equip
merit is not only unsportsman
like, but felao unprofitable In
other ways, Ire adds Under
the Texas Penal Code, shooting
communication lines can bring
two to five years In jail plus
from ftoo to fa.OOO.
