Dear Editor;
A week before the Iowa
Caucus my husband, a
Texas cattleman, and I
campaigned for Governor
John Connally with the
Iowa stockyard people
and farmers. In Sioux Ci-
ty we were part of a
group called "Volunteers
for John B. Connally." At
Fort Dodge we "held the
crowd" for Governor Con
nally because his plane
was grounded and his bus
was late. Connally finally
arrived at midnight and
gave a rousing speech to
the 350 plus who had
stayed to cheer. The ABC
TV camera man said,
"That man astounds me
with the facts and figures
he knows about ALL the
states —and even the
countries of the world!"
The press crew traveling
with Connally were excit
, ed about him and so were
his audiences.
However, everywhere
we went people told us
that our former Texas
Governor would not do
well in the Iowa Caucus.
They explained that
George Bush and Ronald
Keagan had the Republi
can "old guard" sewed up.
Mush had names and tele
phone numbers from his
time as Chairman of the
Republican National Com
mittee and \ad^been
working in Iowa for two
years. "Dutch" Reagan
had lived in Iowa and had
devoted old friends.
Howard Baker didn't
have an organization but
he had a powerful TV
commercial showing him
shaking his finger at an
obnoxious Iranian stu
dent. The commercial
played constantly and
every man, woman and
child could relate to it.
John Connally s
strength in Iowa was with,
the Independent voter,
the person who votes for
the man. Only five per-
cent of the registered
voters go to a caucus —so
it is the "die hard"
Republicans and "die
hard" Democrats. Over 75
percent of Connally sup
porters had never attend
ed a caucus. In Sioux City
I went to a workshop to
instruct our caucus cap
tains. The rules are tricky
and it would be a real
challenge to elect a John.
Connally slate at a Repub
lican caucus in Iowa. A
captain would have to be
extremely intelligent,
persuasive and very
brave!
At Fort Dodge, an el
derly gentleman told me
that he was deeply dis
tressed about the caucus
system. He said, "Look at
all this press-they are
going to put too much em
phasis on this thing and it
is completely mislead
ing!" That man wants
John Connally in the
White House as much as
Bill and I do.

only man in the Presiden

the nation listens, it could
agree.
