Soil Conservation
District News
In their yearly plan of operations
for 1040 the Supervisors of
the Swisher County Soil Conservation
District recommended that
technicians from the Soil Conservation
Service as well as from
ether agencies cooperating with
the District schedule a scries of
meetings for the year The Supervisors
suggested that these meetings
bc of either an educational
application of practices or maintenance
of practices nature The
first of these 1040 meetings wns
held in the home of Woodie Boston
of the Houston Community
Wednesday February 20 with
seven coopcrators present The
principal speaker was W Scott
Amend District Conservationist
from the Soil Conservation Service
office at Piainview Mr Am d
gave n brief history of the why
when and how of the Soil Conservation
Service which led into
discussions of plans for the com
ing year by the farmers present
Quite a lengthy discussion was
held on various legumes and
grasses adapted to this District
and plans were made whereby
each farmer would be notified at
the proper time concerning the
procurement of the various seeds
and the planting date and rate of
the various seeds of his choice
Dates for running contour and
irrigation ditch lines were made
at this meeting thereby elim
inating the necessity of these men
coming to town to notify the Soil
Conservation technicians when
they would want these lines run
This meeting in the Woodie Boston
home was the beginning of
a series of meetings to be holdover
the District in designated
roups so located tin every cooperating
farmer will have a
chance to attend at least one of
these meetings each year
Mrs Boston served the gioup
delicious cookies and coffee and
everyone enjoyed himself with
