Following the recently announced ngrw !
ment between the Attorney General ami
the packing concerns, both as to the cause
and effect, a ntatemcut announcing the mo-
tive of his companies in entering the
agreement has been issued by L. F. Swift,
prealdeut of Suift & Co.
"Although If is true that we have agreed
to sell our interests in stock yards." Mr.
Swift states. "I want to emphatically ;i<
serf that the principal reason for boino:
interested in sto'-k yards has been to Im-
prove the facilities for the proper mar-
keting and handling of live stock, and
that ownership in such yards has not
been used as a means of manipulating
prices, or obtaining unfair profits. I have
often publicly announced that we would
be willing to part with our interests in
stock yards If arrangements could be made,
to continue th"ir efficient operation."
That the public would have eventually
realized the soundness of Swift & Co. s
position is emphasized, but because of the
spirit of unrest and misunderstanding "we
nre glad to make VuJit sa> rifi- es and con
cessions," the stammer 1 adds.
It also declares the decree to which
Swift Co. has agreed to submit "in no,
way finds us guilty of combination in re-
straint of trade, or any other illegal
practices."
"With these thoughts in mind," the
statement concludes, "we trust that, the
public will appreciate the fact that our
position is in no way an admission we
have been guilty of anything economically,
legally or morally wrong, and that we
have made this concession with ihe sincere
hope that it will help to overcome the sus-
picion which still lurks in the minds of
many people"
