STOCKS LACK SUPPORT AND THE
BEARS RA11) MARKET.
Leading: Issues and Specialties Are
Forced Down, But Late Hear Cov-
ering Brings Rally and Re-
covery of Some Losses.
NEW YORK, April 20.—Prices wore
figain depressed shurply today ou the
Stock Exchange. Tiio weeli's ui'tion of
depression Influences ami tbe murkiit'a
luck of support encouraged bears to re-
newed efforts, and during tbe foro part
of today's trading selling was curried ou
with iuiT'uibod vigor. .Many ol tho lead-
leg stocks were forced down - points or
ho, and araoug the Kpeelalllwi tllo los-ies
ran as bigh en 8 points. Nearly n score
of new low records were made. Boar . uv-
cring In the last half hour brought, about
u rally, dorlug which part of the day's
lor sen were recovered. As was the ease
yesterday, there was uothiu« In the day's
developments to which the weakness could
be assigned, and the decline seemed to ho
principally the result of a crippling of the
market's buying power. Apparently no
one wanted stocas, or would take them,
except at concessions. Speculative opera
tions on the long side of the market were
not in keeping with the trend of seiitl
merit and the fall in prices of stocks and
l.ends has not called forth any consider
able Investment demand. While the hulk
of today's selling appeared to be prof"
pknal. the wide range of Investment stocks
offered for sale once more suggested tha.
liquidation was in progress.
An iiu'i'eittw of almost 40,000 In loans
vas the conspicuous feature of the bank
statement. N|w financing of the week and
shifting loans ,from interior hanks to the
city Institutions accounted largely for
the increase. Although the cash >niu W»s
predicted, the re-
.vas a de
excess re-
serve.
The weekly trade review called atten-
tion to the effect of the tariff revision.
Conservatism is shown in regard t.o the
future, there being a disposition to wait
until tariff measures become clear before
mtieipating requirements.
Bonds were depressed in sympathy with
stocks. Total sales, par value, .$1 ,U.'10,000.

All Poiitions Except July Make Now
Low Levels During the Eurly
Trading, But Kally Later.
Close Steady.
NEW YORK, April 2ft.—The cotton mar-
ket was unusually active for a Saturday
half session and ruled more or lean uu-
scttlcd as a result of evening up for over
the May notices expected ou Monday. All
positions but July made new low ground
for the movement during the early trad-
lug, hut prtflfti rallied later, wltli the
close steady at on advance of 1 to (J points,
in response to relatively better cub Us than
expected, predictions that Liverpool houses
would take up whatever May notices might
reach them on Monday and covering for
over the week end. Offerings wore hem y
at the Initial figures, however, owing to
favorable weather crop reports, and fol-
lowing tho Western belt forecast for grad-
ually rlisng temperatures tno market
broke rather sharply.
There eecmed to be a considerable scat-
tering May liquidation, while houses with
Western and Southern connection1!, as
wt 11 :ts uptown interests, wore heavy fil-
ers of the new crop months, and before
the decline wan cheeked prices were about;
2 to 5 points net lower, with the new crop
deliveries making now records for the
season. July was rendered relatively
btudy by covering, and some scattered
buying for a reaction which was based
on expectations that If May notices wore
stopped on Monday there would be a
flurry of old crop short* That position
consequently led the rally in the later
trading, but business tapered off on the
absence of about 4 to ft points from the
low level of the morning. Reports pub
lifhed in a local newspaper indicated nn
Increase of from 0 to 10 per cent in the
acreage of Texas and Oklahoma, which
r.robably Inspired part of the early selling
111 connection with favorable advices as
to the outlook in the fcjoulhwest from
traveling crop experts. There were reports
that recent rains have been excessive in
Louisiana and Mississippi, auil there were
further scattering complaint* based on
abnormally low temperatures, but local
bears considered uncertainty aa to May
notices the uiain factor on the late rally.

EUROPE CREATES A DEMAND
New York ('otton Market Closes Above
lYiday s Prices.
Special Tskgraai to The Express.
NHW YOHIC. April 36.-Ther« Is a bet-
ter demand for cotton In Liverpool from
tho Continent, probably In line with buy-
ing by Bufisia during tlia past month.
Liverpool was better than expected and
their buying here advanced prices at the
opening. Then Wall Street Bold the mar-
ket heavily on Mr. Palmer's speech on
the effect of the proposed tariff, deliv-
ered In tho House yesterday.
May liquidation continued pressing on
tho market. Instructions are being re-
ceived from Europe to tako up the Mays,
but. the quantity Is as yet unknown.
At the closing the market rallied, clos-
ing at above lust night, many conserva-
tive traders pointing oul that the May
liquidation probably marked the end of
the effect of the adverse factors during
the past month.

COTTON AT LOWER LEVEL
Profit-taking; by Smaller Shorts Hin-
ders Decline.
NIOW ORLEANS, April 26,-The puce
of cotton fell to new levels for the week
aud season In the trading of the short
Saturday session. Heavy offerings came
from strong bear Interests, but the de-
cline was held within moderate limits
because of a wave of profit-taking on
tho part of smaller shorts who, in spite
of the promises of favorable weather In
the cotton region over Sunday, were
anxious to oven up and secure profits
over the week end. Considerable liqui-
dation of the long account was in evi-
dence at times, this being stimulated by
conflicting reports regarding the old crop
positions and evidence that they were
belntf manipulated in a dangerous way
for the small traders.
On the opening the tone was steady
and prices were 3 to 8 points up. Cables
were much better than due and brokers
had many buying orders to fill fr >m
shorts who wanted their profits. First
prices were about the highest of ihe
morning. Soon after tho call the new
crops were 4 to 5 points up, but May did
not Increase Its rise of 8 points.
Selling «oon Increased in voium>,
strong short interests being encouraged
by favorable weather reports and the
forecast of good weather and prices ftril
off. At the lowest of the morning the
trading months were 3 to 5 points under
yesterday's close. The close was steady
at a net loss of 1 t? 2 points.

EASIER TONE AT LIVERPOOL HAS
DEPRESSING EFFECT.
Heaviness in Corn Uecomea More Pro-
nounced and Prices Decline—OaU
Weaker—Provisions With-
out Support.
CHICAGO, April 26.—Weakness at Liv-
erpool toduy lowered wheat values iu;re.
Net loss wuB l-2(&iO-S to 5-8<&3-4c. Coru
was off 1-4 to 3-8c at the close, outs 1-4
to 3-be, uud provisious 7J/4 to 15c.
The trade lguored the higher Bueuoe
Ayres and Paris cables ut the opening of
the wheat market, finding inure si^ulfi-
oauco iu the easier tone at Liverpool. The
English market was affected by the high-
ly favorable American crop outlook aud
larger Manitoba offers. Liverpool having
advanced prices all week, the sudlen
change caused a reaction here from the
rather bullish market of yesterday.
Selling of wheat by large bouses was
early iu evidence, and the general trade
showing unwillingness to carry lou^ Hues
over vuHday followed suit. It was toon
discovered there was little- supporting
short interest, and values declined ma-
terially. Primary receipts, due to the
high prices of tbe lust fortnight, also
proved u factor iu the dip. Free selling
of May caused it to drop to July prices,
aud hold at or near them for a great
part of the ses«iou.
Primarv receipts of wheat were (i52,000
bushels, against 353,000 last yea.. Sea-
board clearances of wheut aud flour
equaled 460,000 bushels.
Heaviness which has been developing in
corn for several days became pronounced
toduy. Influential selling on predictions
of lurge increases in receipts caused a
prompt decline, from which there was
only a partial recovery. Fine condition
of pastures and meadows nearly every-
where weakened oatg.
Weaker hogs caused lower provision
values. Leading longs were lurge sellers.
At no time did the market receive much
support.
