WHARTON, Tex., April 3.—Mrs. S. W.
Thomas has let the contract for the erec-
tion of a two-story brick on one of the
main streete. Th® contract price Is $6000.
The dimensions are 27x81. Work will be-
gin tomorrow.
The Rockwood brick is beginning to as-
sume proportions and the contractors
claim they will be able to turn it over
by the last of July.
The city council has contracted for fur-
ther improvements of the streets. Curb-
ings will be extended the entire length
of Milam Street and concrete walks laid.
Electric lights are being put in at the
crossings along the main streets.

State Bank of Palacios has recently in-
creased its capital stork from $2.\000 to
$f>0,O00 and changed its name to State
Guaranty Bank and Trust Company. The
Palacios State Bank has also recently dou-
bled Its capital stock.
Monterey Theater Builds Rapidly.

MONT^ItJvY. Mexico, April 3.—Progress
is being made on the Theatro Independfn-
cia. which lg being constructed on the
ground formerly occupied by Juarez Thea-
ter. The building, facing the street, is
three stories high, and that part of it is
divided into many apartments, back of
these the audience hall is situated wifli
its stage and other rooms. The walls of
the building are completed and consider-
able of the roof is up and the workmen
are rushing the decoration of the front of
the building. Adjoining the theater is an
other building of the same height and
number of stories, which is being roofed
rapidly.

switchboard for the exchange at this
place has arrived and will be installed in
the new quarters over the Bank of Com-
merce. The new board is a large one,
consisting of 330 drops. One hundred and
sixty-five will be put in use.

movement is on In Bastrop, particularly
in the resident districts. The home of
Mrs. Mary Ilasler is in course of construc-
tion ; Dr. N. G. Fowler has let the con-

Anderson County Lands Are Sold.

PALESTINE, Tex., April 3.-Another
big real estate deal was closed in this
city Friday, whereby T. J. Hayes of
Nashville, Tenn , purchased Anderson
County lands to the amount of £30.000.
Most of the property bought is In or near
the Trinity IMver bottoms, though some
uplands were also Included In the deal.
T he purchase of this land by Mr. Hayes
l«i!k caused speculation hi certain quar-
ters. The purchaser did not give out his
plans, but seemed anxious to secure tho
lands, anil also seeiued to have a good
idea where lie wanted the lauds located.

Menard Building will be let in the next
few days. This is to be a two-story

FEDERAL BUILDING IS WANTED
Matter Is Taken Up By Postmaster

BAY CITY. Tex . April 3.—Postmaster
Sayers has been agitating the matter of a
Federal building for Bay City and has
taken the matter up with his superiors in
his department with the result that re-
quests have been made for a list with,
prices of such desirable lots as are on the (
market. Mr. Burgess has also been up- j
proached and he replies that the Govern- '
ment will likely buy lots in order to avoid \
paying an advanced price for lots at a later
time, but that it cannot be hoped that an
appropriation for this purposu will be
made by this Congress.
A letter received from Managing Director
Perkins of the St. Louis. Brownsville
Mexico Railroad Indicates that the Col-
legeport extension deal bad been approved
iu all particulars except that the right of
way extends to the wharfs. The steel and
ties have been ordered.

SEWER SYSTEM FOR PALESTINE

PALESTINE, Tex.. April 3.-Palestina j
will soon have one of the most extensive j
sewer systems in East Texas, the capac- |
lty of the system to be doubled. Manager
V. D. Wilson on Tuesday last let the con-
tract for the placing of four additional
miles of sewer mains. Truehart At Jack-
son of San Antonio were the successful
bidders. The board of directors of th*
company met later and approved and ac-
cepted the contract. Active work of lay-
ing the mains will begin by April 20, and
the northern portion of the city will be
benefited, the south side being well- con-
nected up with the sewer at the present
time.
Two important real estate transfer*
wer recorded here last week. The first
was that in which Thomas B. White Jr.
and John J. Phelps of New Jersey trans-
ferred to Miso Nell McQunH of Missouri,
375.V32 acres of land, the consideration be-
ing $11,198.77. The second transfer is
where Miss McQuaid transfers the same
property to Morris Stern of Missouri.
The land embraced in the transfers in-
cludes part of the Jeremiah Blackweii
survey, John C. Chairs Sr. survey and
surveys Noh. 4, 3, 11. 1, !•". " and 6 of the

house, though the contract has been let
for several weeks. Fourteen thousand dol-
lars In bonds lias been voted. The trustees
bought another two-acre block <»f land ad-
joining the site of the old house for $1000
and will build on it.
Large tubes and other material are lay-
ing here waiting to be placed In a large
iron bridge across tiie Aransas on Skid-
more and Hefuglo Itoads. It will be one
of the largest bridges In the county and
Is much needed.
A Baptist church Is being built at Paps-
lote, seven miles distant.

second story. When completed it will
be one of the handsomest in the Ptate.

JOURDANTON, Tex . April 3 —The Ar-
tesian Belt Railroad Company has und -r
construction at this point commodious
pens for the loading and unloading of
stock. These improvements are being
made in anticipation of heavy stock
shipments from this point during the next
few months, stock owners along the line
having indicated to the railroad people
that there will be three or four hundred
car loads of cattle shipped out In the
immediate future.
Lewis Maverick of San Antonio has
under construction a two-story residence
in the western part of this city.
R. A. Franklin is erecting a five-room
residence in the southern part of town.
J. R. Daughtrey, late of I'leasanton
but now identified with the Jourdanton

Druggist Puts in Own Private Plant.

SAN BENITO, Tex., April 3.—The first
electric light was lit here last week. L.
M. Valdetero, the proprietor of the San
Benito Drug Store, who will occupy the
lower hall of the new Cooper building,
has purchased a gasoline engine and
dynamo of the very latest type, capable
of supplying 150 of the new bulb lights.
He is moving into the new store, which
will be up-to-date in every respect. He
has a large soda fountain which will be
ablaze with lights, and the store through
out will be supplied with fans
C. W. Whittlesey has made an exten-
sion to his hotel. He was the former
proprietor of tin- San Benito Hotel, and
about eight months ago moved into his
own place.
Everything here points to rapid prog-
ress. Houses continue to go up and
homeseekers continue to arrive.
MERCEDES IS BEAUTIFYING
City Is Planting Palms and Trees on
Residence StreetR.

MERCEDES. Tex., April 3.-The city is
spending in^ planting palms, oleand-
ers and dlversa folia and silver-leaf
oaks on the principal residence streets of
the city These trees have recently ar-
rived from California and most of them
are now planted. They add much toward
the beautifying of the place, and Is the
only enterprise of Its kind that has been
undertaken up to this time.
The Presbyterian Church Has Just com-
pleted Its new building The building is
a mission chapel, finished In white with
green roof and centrally located. The
Presbvterlan minister visits tills point
twice' a month, and n growing Sunday
school Is conducted here each Sabbath
afternoon.

the local plant of the Bell Company, at j

Bell lines in New Mexico and Arizona

The now- Tri-State is to the Ter-
ritories and West Texas what the
Southwestern Telegraph and Telephone
Company is to the rest of Texas and the
territory where it operates. Headquar-
ters of the Tri-State Company are located
in El Paso
New lines will be built until the entire
Southwest is covered with t<>ll lines, in-
l chiding a line west to Los Angeles. Cal .
through Douglas. Bisbee and Tucson. A
long-distance line is to be built to Dallas,
also, which will give San Antonio and
Houston, through Dallas, 1"1il, distance
