Vets' memorial
to honor service
Presenting plans
By Tracy R. Mesler
MONTAGUE - A coun-
ty-wide veteran's memorial
received the go-ahead
Monday from the Montague
County Commissioner's
Court.
County Veterans Service
Officer Randy Duckworth of
Nocona showed the court an
artist's concept of the granite
and flag memorial which is
being proposed for the north-
west lawn of the courthouse
facing west.
Memorial information
will be displayed on the cen-
ter piece of granite while
flanking walls will bear the
names of veterans,
Duckworth explained.
The memorial committee
hopes include the service-
man or service woman's
name, rank, branch of serv-
ice and when they served.
Such as "John Smith, Sgt,
USA, World War II" or
"James Smith, Lt, USAF,
Viet-nam."
Duckworth explained that
the various veteran's organi-
zations, and veterans them-
selves, would fund the proj-
ect.
"The one thing you might
have left out," County Judge
Tommie Sappington, a
Vietnam veteran himself,
chuckled, "we will accept
donations."
A total of six flagpoles
will adorned the memorial -
the flags of each branch of
service Army, Navy, Air
Force, Marine Corps, and
Coast Guard with a slightly
smaller pole flying the
POW/MIA flag.
The memorial will be
lighted so the flags can be
flown 24 hours a day and the
veteran's organizations will
take care of the flags and
replace them.
Individual service mem-
ber's names will be included
on the memorial for a dona-
tion.
Duckworth and Judge
Sappington said the total
amount of donation needed
has yet to be finalized, but it
will be basically cost plus
$10 to help fund the remain-
der of the project.
"I think it will be very
nice," commented Pet. 4
Comm. Bob Langford.
Duckworth noted that the
installation might require
removing the smaller tree on
the northwest quadrant of the
courthouse lawn, but that has
not been firmly determined
at this point.
"We will come back
before we start (construc-
tion)," the judge told the
court.
The court approved a res-
olution designating April as
Child Abuse Prevention
Month. Representatives of
the Montague County Child
Welfare Board, the Amity
Club of Bowie and Patsy's
House-Bowie were in atten-
dance. Following the meet

Actors advance on
The Nocona High School
2011 UIL One-Act Play pro-
duction of "Ardy Fafirsin"
won the Area 1 AA competi-
tion on April 6 at NCTC in
Gainesville to advance to
Regionals in Stephenville
this Friday.
Loosely based on the 16th
century murder of Thomas
Arden, playwright Don
Nigro gives us unforgettable
characters in the genre of a
dark comedy. Through a
series of botched murder
attempts from a cast of bum-
bling misfits, Ardy's wife,
Alice, discovers that murder
is certainly easier said than
done, even with "help." But
what is Alice's true motiva-
tion for getting rid of her
husband? Nigro poses "part
of the reason Alice feels so
compelled to murder her
husband is that nice people
make us nervous, and we
secretly hate them."
Advancing along with
Nocona out of Area will be S
& S Consolidated with their
production of "By the Bog of
Cats."
Regional contest will be
held at the Clyde H. Wells
Fine Arts Center on the cam-
pus of Tarleton State
University Friday, April 15,
with Nocona being the last
show to perform at approxi-
mately 6 p.m.
Other schools competing
will be Cooper, Maypearl,
Teague, and Caddo Mills.
The competition is open to
the public with an admission
of $7 for adults and $5 for
