Tracks ji tracings . . .
Scatter shooting
By Tracy R. Mesler
Scatter shooting from target
to target, . .
It has been nine months now
since the Nocona School Board
took an on-site tour of Nocona
High School.
There the board members
clucked their collective tongues
over the ground water seepage
beneath the east wing of the
school commenting they need-
ed to hire an engineer and start
work this summer to fix that
problem.
Because before they can fix
the track - which is a broken
ankle waiting to happen - they
first must fix the drainage prob-
lems their annexes have com-
pounded on the east end of the
building.
Well, summer is almost
here, and no engineers have
been hired, nor bids let so work
can begin the day after school
is out.
So it will be another year
before they address this situa-
tion again.
Does anyone else see a simi-
larity between this and the fail-
ure to resolve the unpaid lunch-
room charges?
Speaking of the unpaid
lunchroom charges.
When you see the signs
posted in local restaurants -
"Students must pay before
ordering food" - do you think
the teenagers are just following
the examples their parents set
when the kids were in elemen-
tary school?
You know the example of
"You don't have to pay for
your food!"
**
Don't get your hopes up citi-
zens of Nocona. While the new
city fire hall will have a brick
front, what you and the rest of
the world will see from the
other three sides it will be a tin
barn.
It seems your city council
was willing to just put a false
front to the structure and not
brick the whole thing.
We have private property
owners spending thousands of
dollars to help dress up down-
town, and thus give the city a
look, and feel that will be invit-
ing to shoppers and tourists.
Meanwhile the city fathers,
when faced with choosing to
participate in the downtown
revitalization, gave half an
effort.
Or in this case a fourth of an
effort.
And before you ask, no they
cannot decide later to brick the
other three sides. They did not
pour the necessary brick
ledges!
**
George Orwell once wrote
that some pigs are more equal
than others.
So imagine the shock that
flashed across the faces of the
county commissioners, the
county attorney and other elect-
ed officials to learn while they
turned in their employee's orig-
inal time cards every two
weeks, the Sheriffs
Department and Jail did not.
Instead, County Treasurer
Linda McGaughey was only
allowed to make photocopies.
She was not allowed to keep
the original records . . . even
though she is the county's
human resource officer!
Yep, some pigs are more
equal than others.
Finally, when will the
Nocona School Board and
administration decide to quit
complaining about operating a
swimming pool (which is
admittedly a parks and recre-
ation function of the city and
not the school) and instead cap-
italize on the opportunity and
make silk out of a sow's ear.
Make better use of the pool
by including swimming as part
of the district's over-all physi-
cal education program?
With the school owning the
pool, hiring the life guards and
training them, there is no
excess, no excuse whatsoever
that a single child graduates
from NISD and doesn't know
how to swim!
No reason whatsoever -
other than a lack of imagina-
tion.

developed for the Hospital
Board, City Council or Water
District Board, that left City
Hall conducting the School
Board election.
The unique lack of contested
races developed too late to get
pre-clearance from the U.S.
Department of Justice's Office
of Voting Rights to relocate the
election to the School
Administration Building.
Dr. Len Dingier is unop-
posed in his race for a third
three-year term on the board.
All other local elections were
uncontested this year.
Two City Council incum-
bents Tracy O'Neal and Jimmy
Hadley are joined by newcomer
Steve Tettleton (who replaces
Mayor Pro Tem Don Armstrong
who passed away over the
weekend).
Rick Lewis, Charles May
and Todd Peterson are all unop-
posed for re-election to two year
terms on the Nocona Hospital
Board.
And Chairman Bill Crowe
and Donnie Fenoglio are unop-
posed in their bids for four year
terms of office on the North
Montague County Water Supply
District Board of Directors.
All candidates will officially
take office after the time period
for canvassing election results
has passed.

Kyle Russell, Nocona High
School junior, has completed a
special project for Keep Nocona
Beautiful as an ecology addition
to his college application prepa-
ration.
Since one of KNB's goals
has been to eliminate old appli-
ances in Nocona, Kyle was
asked to find and document
them for KNB.
With the vehicle displaying a
"Keep Texas Beautiful" sign, he
and his father, J.P. #1, Roger
Russell, spent several hours
driving the 33 miles of streets in
Nocona to find them .
Kyle spoke to a resident or
left a message at each of the 23
locations found, delivering the
information that the appliance
could be taken to a recycling
location, or would be picked up
free of charge if they called
KNB and left their information.
Lindy Ritchie, KNB presi-
dent, says she has only received
3 messages from this project so
far, but that Kyle's work is
much appreciated.
If you have an old washer,
dryer, refrigerator, air condition-
er or other metal objects to be
collected, please call 825-4488
and leave your name and phone
number. Your call will be
returned as soon as possible.

Sound C Readers!
We at the Nocona Public Library would like to give our sincere
appreciation to all the young men and women of Nocona High
School (pictured below) for their hard work in cleaning up our
flowerbeds.
The parents and grandparents of these young people should be
proud of their dedication to keeping Nocona Beautiful.
Our town is fortunate to have such a great example of our com-
munity in these young people.
