Johnston challenges Lanford for Pet. 4
Most races contested
By Tracy R. Mesler
Monday evening the fil-
ing books closed for the
Democratic, Libertarian and
Republican Parties setting
the stage for Election '10.
Three of the county races
are unopposed, and only one
race will be contested in
November on the General
Election ballot - that being
for county judge.
All of the other races will
be decided in the Republican
Primary, although with five
candidates for County
Commissioner Precinct 2
and four candidates for
Justice of the Peace Precinct
2, County republican
Chairman Gary McAlister
has a prediction - "Run off!"
Incumbent County Clerk
Glenda Henson (Democrat)
of Nocona, incumbent
District Clerk Leisa Darden
(Democrat) of Bowie and
incumbent County Treasurer
Linda McGaughey
(Republican) of Nocona are
unopposed in this year's
election.
Two of the county's four
county commissioners - Pet.
2 Comm. Jerry Clement of
Bowie and Pet. 4 Comm.
Tommie Sappington of Lake
Nocona - announced in
December their plans to
retire at the end of their cur-
rent term of office thus open-
ing the doors for a new
office-holder.
On the very last day to
file for a place on the ballot
former Pet. 1 Constable Don
Johnston filed as a Democrat
for the Precinct 4 seat.
Johnston, who is retired
from the Air Force, retired as
Constable following the
2008 election but has contin-
ued to work as the bailiff for
the 97th District Court and to
work as a dispatcher for the
Nocona Police Department.
He will face Sappington's
long-time foreman, Bob
Langford of Nocona on the
Republican ballot.
Monday, Mike Sanders of
the Bowie was the fifth
Republican candidate to
seek election of the Precinct
2 commissioner's seat being
vacated by Clement.
J.K. "Rooter" Brite, Jim
Conaster, James Gamblin
and Billy Joe Stout had
already filed for places on
the ballot.
County Judge Ted Winn
is being challenged on the
Republican ballot by retired
businessman Mike Green of
Nocona Hills. And the win-
ner of that Primary will be
facing former County Clerk
Lynn Gray, who is unop-
posed on the Democratic
ballot.
Both justice of the peace
races are being challenged
on the Republican ticket as
both officeholders, who
were appointed to their seats
last year, face their first elec-
tion test.
Retired Farmers Branch
Battalion Chief Rick Lewis
is being challenged by
Nocona dispatcher Alan
Godwin and by former
Nocona School Board mem-
ber David Allen for the
Justice of the Peace Precinct
One seat. Lewis was
appointed to the position in
March, succeeding Judge
Roger Russell, who
resigned.
Monday three men filed
for the JP Precinct 2 post

indication.
The NEDC went through
the process of applying for
Revolving Loan Funds from
the USD A Rural

small and emerging busi-

But after a month of
knocking on doors and ask-
ing questions, Yohe hasn't
found a single business will-

loan program.
