Sound O *, Readers!
Letters-
Texan Audie Murphy
(1924-1971), the most deco-
rated soldier of World War
II, wrote the following
poem he dedicated to
deceased fellow service
members and entitled, "If I
Should Die":
So long my comrades
Sleep ye where you fell
upon the field;
But tred softly please
March o'er my heart with
ease
March on and on
But to God alone we kneel.
Alone and forever more
from earthly care
The noble ruins of men lie
buried here.
You strong men, good men,
Endowed with youth and
much the will to live.
I hear no protest from the
mute lips of the dead.
They rest; there is no more
to give.
It is a fitting tribute to all
military service members
who died serving our great
nation. This Memorial day
let us all take a moment to
reverently remember with
pride and patriotism all of
those military men and
women who have scarified
their blessed lives for our
blessed liberties.
