Chamber has a good idea for building
Turn Justin Leathergoods
By Tracy R. Mesler
The Chamber of
Commerce has hit on an idea
that could be a lynch pin to
revitalizing downtown
Nocona.
At this month's City
Council Meeting Chamber
Executive Director Wanda
Wood and Director Patty
Fenoglio laid a plan before
yower move, , .
A momentary power out-
age had Nocona patrolman
busy early Tuesday morn-
ing directing traffic
through the Clay and
Grayson Street intersec-
tions on U.S. hwy. 82 as the
outage turned the signals
red in all directions.

the city council which would
turn a sow's ear into a silk
purse.
Their plan? To take City
Manager Lynn Henley's off-
hand observation and run
with it converting the old
Justin Leathergoods
Building into an open air
market - one that would pro-
vide shelter from the sun,
wind and rain. It would pro-
vide public restrooms con-
venient to the Mary
Beckman Davis Downtown
Park and present a facility
for things ranging from
dances to farmer's markets.
Two years ago the Justin
Building was deeded over to
the city. Since then the city
has looked at refurbishing
into open air market place
the building itself, and goal and a lot of stick-to-it-
passed on the idea, before
attempting unsuccessfully
twice to sell it.
After attending a confer-
ence, the three Chamber
ladies as well as EDC
Executive Assistant Rose
Guana returned fired up
about what a community can
do with some direction, a
ness.
With blessings from the
city council, the Chamber
would solicit grants and pro-
grams to help finance the
conversion.
Henley was quick to point
out the facility could provide
something that is badly
needed for any downtown
activity - rest rooms.
The chamber will now
develop a plan on how it
intends to accomplish the
project and then bring it back
to the council for approval.
